In talking about Harvard students, many people automatically refer to Bill Gates with his dark framed glasses and a colored shirt, in a word, fashion-free. However, a recent freshman male beauty pageants may have done away with some Harvard stereotypes.
Harvard’s online Freeze College magazine holds a beauty pageant for newly enrolled male students every year since 2008. Now the third Mr. Harvard Freshman contest is ongoing. Who will be the lucky guy? Maybe the last contest can give us some clues.
Being Mr. Harvard Freshman is really a tough job: In addition to looks, the winner needs to have a sense of humor and an outgoing, charismatic personality. But before all that, he has to undergo a rather grueling competition to win the title. Out of over 700 freshmen from all over the world, 80 were chosen to take part in the contest. A second vote by students picked 30 to go on to the next round. Only 13 could make it to the final, in which they underwent a strict exam. After that, online voters selected their favorite man, and a Mr. Harvard Freshman emerged. This genuinely fair procedure means Mr. Harvard Freshman deserves his legend, “the star of Harvard"
In the last step of Mr. Harvard Freshman contest, the 13 contestants were waiting for the result of the final voting. The 13 handsome boys were from America, Singapore, France and Finland, among other countries. Their different cultural backgrounds made for different personalities. Some were athletes, some were refined; others were nervous, obviously scared by the occasion.
In order that students could get a better insight into the young men, Freeze College made available detailed online profiles to Harvard’s voting public. On the topic webpage, in addition to the basic information of the 13 contestants, there were questions for the guys to answer; for example “Why do you think Harvard girls are the best?”
But flattering the female voters doesn’t necessarily make a candidate a winner. Mr. Harvard Freshman 2011, Siddhant Singh, from Mumbai, India said that a relationship should develop naturally; showering a girl with complements wasn’t the way to her heat. The simplicity and honesty of his answer must have gone a long way to winning him that year’s Mr. Harvard Freshman title.
