266　extend，expand和prolong

① extend在表示空間上的延伸時主要指直線狀的伸展，也指時間。

The river extends in an eastward direction. 這條河向東方延伸。

She extended her hand and shook hands with me. 她伸出手與我握手。

extend 還可用于指擴(kuò)大事物的種類、影響或勢力范圍等。

We have obtained the permission to extend the field of investigation. 我們已獲得許可，擴(kuò)大調(diào)查的范圍。

② expand指擴(kuò)大，擴(kuò)張，強調(diào)“平面或立體”的伸展。

The river expands and forms a lake. 河流擴(kuò)大而成為一個湖泊。

The city has now expanded to 4 times its original size. 這個城市現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)擴(kuò)大到原來大小的4倍。

③ prolong常指時間延長，持續(xù)時間的拖長，超過了一般和正常的界線。

They prolonged/extended their visit by a few days. 他們把訪問時間延長了幾天。

Medicine prolongs our lives. 藥物能延長我們的生命。

a prolonged discussion 冗長的討論
