385　increase和add

① increase作動詞用時，可以是及物動詞或不及物動詞，意為“增長，增加”，讀音為［?n?kri?s］。

The population is increasing rapidly. 人口在迅速增加。

The driver increased the speed of the car. 司機加快了車速。

The people there have greatly increased their income. 那里的人們大大地提高了收入。

② increase作名詞用時，讀音為［??nkri?s］，為不可數(shù)名詞，但可以說a rapid increase，a steady increase。

There is a rapid increase in steel production. 鋼產(chǎn)量在迅速增長。

The increase of income will make people live better. 收入的增加會使人們生活得更好。

③ increase和add都可表示“增加”，但用法不同。increase主要指數(shù)量、重量、價值、力量等的增加；add則表示將某物加在另一物上，使之增加，常用于add sth. to結構中。
