① be over中的over是形容詞,表示“結(jié)束”,相當(dāng)于finished,指某件事本身已經(jīng)結(jié)束。
The affair is over now. 這件事現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)了結(jié)了。
The meeting was over when I got there. 我到達(dá)那里時(shí),會(huì)議已經(jīng)結(jié)束了。
② be up表示時(shí)間上的結(jié)束,意為“完結(jié)的,耗盡了”,如規(guī)定某次演講一個(gè)小時(shí),一個(gè)小時(shí)的時(shí)間到了,就是time is up。
Now time is up. Class is over. 現(xiàn)在時(shí)間已到,下課。
When the five weeks was up,everybody was sad that he had to leave. 五個(gè)星期滿了,大家都為他終將離去而感到難過(guò)。
He knew his game was up. 他知道他的把戲完了。
