522　be over和be up

① be over中的over是形容詞，表示“結(jié)束”，相當(dāng)于finished，指某件事本身已經(jīng)結(jié)束。

The affair is over now. 這件事現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)了結(jié)了。

The meeting was over when I got there. 我到達(dá)那里時，會議已經(jīng)結(jié)束了。

② be up表示時間上的結(jié)束，意為“完結(jié)的，耗盡了”，如規(guī)定某次演講一個小時，一個小時的時間到了，就是time is up。

Now time is up. Class is over. 現(xiàn)在時間已到，下課。

When the five weeks was up，everybody was sad that he had to leave. 五個星期滿了，大家都為他終將離去而感到難過。

He knew his game was up. 他知道他的把戲完了。

提示

be up還可表示“已提出（供討論），準(zhǔn)備好的，建成的”等。

The matter is up for discussion. 這件事已提起討論。

“Tea is up！” shouted Mary. “茶準(zhǔn)備好了！”瑪麗叫喚著。

The new house hasn't been up long. 新房子才建成不久。
