if and when

If and When

IF and WHEN were friends. Every week they met and had lunch together. Their conversation usually centered on all the things they were going to achieve. They both had many dreams and they loved to talk about them.

This particular Saturday when they met, WHEN sensed that IF was not in a great mind. As usual they sat at the table reserved for them and ordered their lunch. Once they placed their order, WHEN questioned IF,”IF, what is wrong with you? You don’t seem your usual cheery self?”

IF looked at WHEN and replied, ”I’m not sure. I just don’t feel like I am making any progress. This last week I saw a course I wanted to take if only I had the time to take it.”

WHEN knew exactly how IF felt.”Yeah,” replied WHEN, “I too saw a course ND I m going to register when I get enough money together.” WHEN then said, “Well, what about that new job you were going to apply for? You were so excited about it last week. Did you apply?”

IF replied,”If my computer didn’t break down last week, I would have applied. But my computer is still not working, so I could not type my resume.”

“Don’t worry about it IF, when you are ready, another job will come through. I have thinking about looking for another job also, but I will wait and when the weather gets nicer I will look then.”WHEN then went on to tell IF about his week, hoping that it would cheer him up a bit.

The man at the next table couldn’t help but overhear WHEN and IF. They both were talking about when this and if that, and finally he couldn’t take it anymore.”Excuse me gentleman,” the man said. IF and WHEN both looked at the man and wondered what he wanted. The man continued, “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help hearing your conversation. I think I know how you could solve your problems.”

IF smiled and thought, how could a complete stranger know how to solve all of their problems. If only he knew, when he realized the challenges they faced, there was no way he could solve their problems! Curiously, IF asked the gentleman, “How do you think you can solve our problems?”

The gentleman smiled and said, “You only need to listen to yourselves. It remains me of an old proverb: If and When were planted, and Nothing grew.”

IF and WHEN both looked at surprised, and suddenly realized that what the gentleman had said was so true. Both of them were guilty of thinking, acting and living their life for the “ifs” and “when”. The gentleman left and IF and WHEN’s conversation changed. They made a pact that when they met for lunch next week, there would be no “ifs” or “whens”; they would only talk about what they had accomplished!

“如果”和”等到”

“如果”和”等到”是一對(duì)好朋友。她們每周都見(jiàn)面共進(jìn)午餐。她們的談話內(nèi)容總是圍繞著各自的打算展開(kāi)。兩人都有許多夢(mèng)想,也都喜歡談?wù)摳髯缘膲?mèng)想。

這次周六他們見(jiàn)面時(shí),“等到”發(fā)覺(jué)“如果”心情不是很好。像往常一樣,他們坐在預(yù)定的桌前,點(diǎn)菜吃午飯。一點(diǎn)完菜,“等到”便問(wèn)“如果”:“‘如果’,你怎么了?你看起來(lái)可不像平時(shí)的那個(gè)快樂(lè)的人呀!”

“如果”看了看“等到”,答道:“我也不知道。我只是覺(jué)得自己毫無(wú)長(zhǎng)進(jìn)。上周我看見(jiàn)一門很想學(xué)的課程,如果我有時(shí)間就好了?!?br>
“等到”十分理解“如果”的感受?!笆前。薄暗鹊健闭f(shuō),“我也看到了一門課程,等有了足夠的錢,我就去報(bào)名。”“等到”接著說(shuō):“對(duì)了,你先前打算申請(qǐng)的那份新工作怎么樣了?上周你說(shuō)起它的時(shí)候可是十分興奮呀。你申請(qǐng)了么?”

“如果”答道:“如果上周電腦沒(méi)壞,我就申請(qǐng)了??呻娔X壞了,所以我沒(méi)法寫簡(jiǎn)歷?!?br>
“別擔(dān)心,‘如果’。等你一切就緒,又會(huì)有其他工作的。我也在考慮找份別的活兒,但我會(huì)等上一陣兒,等天氣轉(zhuǎn)好我就去找?!薄暗鹊健崩^續(xù)向“如果”講述自己這一周的情況,希望能讓“如果”高興起來(lái)。

臨桌的一個(gè)人無(wú)意間聽(tīng)見(jiàn)了“等到”和“如果”的談話。他們一直在討論“等到……如果……”,這個(gè)人終于忍無(wú)可忍:“打擾一下,先生們,”他說(shuō)?!叭绻焙汀暗鹊健笨粗@個(gè)人,不知道他想干什么。這個(gè)人接著說(shuō):“很抱歉,我無(wú)意間聽(tīng)到了你們的談話。我想我知道該如何解決你們的問(wèn)題。”

“如果”笑了笑,暗想,一個(gè)完全陌生的人怎么可能知道如何解決他們所有的問(wèn)題呢。即便他知道,一旦他體會(huì)到他們所面臨的壓力,也會(huì)變得束手無(wú)策!“如果”好奇地問(wèn)這位先生:“您怎么就認(rèn)為您能解決我們的問(wèn)題呢?”

這個(gè)男人笑了笑,說(shuō)道:“你們只需聽(tīng)聽(tīng)你們自己的談話。這讓我想起了一句古諺:種下‘如果’和‘等到’,看不到收獲?!?br>
他看見(jiàn)“如果”和“等到”滿臉困惑,就笑著解釋說(shuō):“數(shù)數(shù)你們用了多少次‘如果’和‘等到’這兩個(gè)詞。與其坐想‘如果’和 ‘等到’,不如馬上行動(dòng),付諸實(shí)施,停止空談?!?

“如果”和“等到”十分驚訝,但猛然意識(shí)到這位先生說(shuō)的對(duì)。他們二人都為只會(huì)空想并只靠“如果”和“等到”過(guò)活而感到內(nèi)疚。那位先生離開(kāi)以后,“如果”和“等到”的話題有了改變。他們達(dá)成了一項(xiàng)協(xié)議:下周見(jiàn)面吃飯時(shí),不許再說(shuō)“如果”和“等到”,而只能聊“做了”和“實(shí)現(xiàn)”!
