COURAGE AND COWARDICE

勇敢與懦弱

Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert CRIed out, "A fight! let us go and see!"

羅伯特和亨利走在放學(xué)回家的路上，就在路口拐彎處，羅伯特大聲喊道：“有人在打架！我們?nèi)タ纯窗桑?rdquo;

"No," said Henry; "let us go quietly home and not meddle with this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it, and may get into mischief."

亨利說：“不去，我們還是老老實(shí)實(shí)地回家，不要被這類吵架事件牽扯。我們不但幫不上什么忙，或許還會更加添亂。”

"You are a coward, and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran.

“你是個(gè)膽小鬼，不敢去是吧，”羅伯特說完，自己一個(gè)人跑開了。

Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school, as usual.

亨利徑自回家，下午還是照常去學(xué)校上課。

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward,and they laughed at him a great deal.

但是，羅伯特卻告訴其他小孩子——亨利是個(gè)膽小鬼，他們都在嘲笑他。

Henry had learned, however, that true courage is shown most in bearing reproach when not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong.

不過，亨利了解真正的勇敢是在忍受本不應(yīng)得的恥辱時(shí)表現(xiàn)出來的，而且他并沒有做壞事，理應(yīng)無畏無懼。

A few days after, Robert was bathing with some schoolmates, and got out of his depth.

幾天后，羅伯特正和同學(xué)們在一個(gè)水池中洗澡，不自覺地浸入到深水區(qū)。

He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain.

他掙扎著，大聲地求救，但是一切都徒勞。

The boys who had called Henry a coward, got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

那些叫亨利膽小鬼的孩子們都盡快地跑了出來，甚至沒有一個(gè)人想到去幫助他。

Robert was fast sinking, when Henry threw off his clothes,and sprang into the water.

羅伯特正在迅速下沉，此時(shí)，亨利脫下衣服，跳入水中。

He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time.

就在羅伯特將要沉下去的一剎那，亨利抓住了他。

By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore, and thus saved his life.

經(jīng)過努力，亨利不顧個(gè)人安危地將羅伯特拉至岸邊，就這樣拯救了他的生命。

Robert and his schoolmates were ashamed at having called Henry a coward.

羅伯特和同學(xué)們都對自己稱呼亨利是個(gè)膽小鬼而感到很羞愧。

They owned that he had more courage than any of them.

他們承認(rèn)亨利比任何一個(gè)男孩子都勇敢。

Never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

永遠(yuǎn)不要懼怕做好事，但總要當(dāng)心別做惡事。
