An Absent-minded Husband

I was accompanying my husband on a business trip.

He carried his portable computer with him, and the guard at the airport

gate asked him to open the case.

It was locked, and the man waited patiently as my embarrassed spouse

struggled to remember the combination.

At last he succeeded. “Why are you so nervous?" I asked him.

My husband confessed: “The numbers are the date of our anniversary."

心不在焉的丈夫

我陪丈夫一起出差,他帶著他的手提式計算機。機場出口處檢查員要他打開包。

他耐心地等著我那窘迫的丈夫設(shè)法回想起暗鎖的密碼。最后他終于想起來了。

“你為什么那么緊張呢?”我問他。

“密碼是我們的結(jié)婚紀念日。”他承認道。

【詞匯講解】

1.absent-minded:心不在焉的。Absent是缺席的意思，mind是心思、想法的

意思，那么心思缺席了，指的就是心不在焉。

2.accompany陪伴。也有伴隨的意思，例如：thunder accompanies lighting.

雷聲伴著電閃。還有“補充”的意思，例如：he accompanied his speech

with gestures.他演講時附帶著做手勢。

3.portable便攜的，portable computer就是手提電腦。作名詞的時候就是

“便攜式計算機/電視機/收音機”的意思。

4. succeed做不及物動詞時有“成功”的意思，做及物動詞時，則有“接

在……后面”之意，例如：A silence succeeded his words.他的話說完后便

是一片靜默。

5. confess承認。Confess 加名詞或動名詞，就是承認某事的意思。例如：I

must confess that I didn’t understand

a word she said.我得承認我一點也沒聽懂她說的話。

6.anniversary結(jié)婚周年。也可以只表示“紀念日”，例如：celebrate the

55th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China 慶祝中華

人民共和國成立55周年。
