Today we'll be talking about blended words in English that combine two existing words: 今天我們要說說英語里把兩個(gè)詞混在一起,組成一個(gè)新的混成詞

For example:

Bromance: brother + romance 基友、基情

Murse: man + purse 男人的小夾包

這類詞叫“破饅頭”

These words are called portmanteaus: 這些詞叫混合詞

Portmanteau sounds like 破饅頭: Portmanteau聽起來很像破饅頭

Portmanteau is originally a French word. It means a suitcase with two compartments: portmanteau是一個(gè)法語詞,原意指有兩個(gè)夾層的皮箱

There are a lot of fun and useful portmanteaus in English. They'll help you sound very native and plugged in: 英語里有很多有趣的、實(shí)用的混成詞;使用它們會(huì)讓你的英語聽起來很地道、對美國文化很了解

我很hangry!

Hangry: hungry + angry 肚子一餓、脾氣就很臭

Hangry is a pretty new word. It's been around for 2 or 3 years: hangry是個(gè)挺新的詞,大概就是這兩三年發(fā)明的

To coin a word: 發(fā)明一個(gè)詞

Most of these terms have been newly coined, but some older portmanteaus have been in the English language for a long time, such as neither and brunch: 很多混成詞是這兩年才涌現(xiàn)的,但是也有一些歷史悠久的混成詞,比如:

Neither: not + either

Brunch: breakfast + lunch

直男癌

Mansplain: man + explain 直男癌說教

It means to talk down to woman, in a very condescending way: 意思就是用很不懈、很輕蔑的口吻跟女人解釋、說話

A man who mansplains is a mansplainer: 一個(gè)這樣說教的男人是個(gè)mansplainer

Something they might say is, "You're a woman, you wouldn't understand": 他們典型的臺(tái)詞就是“你們女人不懂”

Vlogging = video + blogging 視頻博客

Blogging = web + logging

Video clip, clip: 短視頻

Vlogging became a really popular term when YouTube started becoming a more commonly used platform for people to post videos: Youtube推動(dòng)了vlogging紅人

Cronut: croissant + donut 羊角甜甜圈

Cronuts became famous in New York a few years ago, and lines to get them were very long: cronut誕生在紐約,前幾年特別紅,要排幾小時(shí)隊(duì)才買得到

豆腐火雞

Tofurkey: tofu + turkey 素火雞

During Thanksgiving, being a vegetarian can get quite lonely, so tofurkey was born: 感恩節(jié),素食主義者沒東西吃,所以素火雞誕生了

Turducken: turkey + duck + chicken 火雞+鴨+雞

It's a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey: 就是把一只雞塞在一只鴨里面,再塞到一只火雞里

It's pretty advanced cooking: 這真是功夫菜

Romcom: romantic + comedy 浪漫喜劇

Dramedy: drama + comedy 劇情喜劇

Mockumentary: mock + documentary 偽紀(jì)錄片類型,比如美劇Veep(副總統(tǒng))這類型的

Edutainment: education + entertainment 寓教于樂

時(shí)尚類

Jeggings: jean + leggings 貼身緊身牛仔褲

Jeggings look like jeans but feel like leggings and always contain a lot of stretch: jegging看起來像牛仔褲,但材質(zhì)更像緊身褲,很有彈性

Murse: man+purse 男人用的小皮包

每天都能用的混成詞

Chillax: chill + relax 放松休閑

Chill means to take it easy, to calm down: chill的意思是放輕松

If someone is very tense and stressed or angry, you can say "chill": 如果一個(gè)人很緊張、壓力大、生氣,你可以跟他說“chill”

You can use chillax to describe your weekend plans, e.g. I'm gonna chillax this weekend: 你能用chillax來談?wù)撟约旱闹苣┌才?,比?quot; I'm gonna chillax this weekend"

是朋友也是敵人

Frenemy: friend+enemy 既是朋友又是敵人

Smog: smoke + fog 霧霾

Pleather: plastic + leather 人造革

In North America, people who are concerned about the environment and animal rights will wear pleather, and apparel made from this material is often quite expensive: 在北美,很多環(huán)保人士會(huì)買pleather, 人造革制品,這些通常都很貴,可能比真皮還貴

Fantabulous: fantastic + fabulous 魔性美麗
