The elephant is the largest of quadrupeds;

大象是四蹄動(dòng)物當(dāng)中最大的；

He then stretched his proboscis in a straight line as far as he could,

and seeing himself pursued by the guard whose orders were to conduct him to prison, took refuge under the elephant.

一個(gè)衛(wèi)兵追了過(guò)來(lái)，一旦被抓住，就要被關(guān)進(jìn)監(jiān)獄，這個(gè)印度士兵藏在了大象的身體下面。

The guard soon finding his retreat, attempted in vain to take him from his asylum; for the elephant vigorously defended him with his trunk.

As soon as the soldier became sober, and saw himself placed under such an unwieldy animal,

he was so terrified that he scarcely durst move either hand or foot;

but the elephant soon caused his fears to subside by caressing him with his trunk, and thus tacitly saying, "Depart in peace."

可是大象很快打消了他的恐懼，用鼻子撫摩著他，似乎在說(shuō)，“放心離開(kāi)吧。”

A pleasing anecdote is related of an elephant which was the property of the nabob of Lucknow.

還有一個(gè)人們喜聞樂(lè)見(jiàn)的故事，一位印度王子有一頭不同尋常的大象。

There was in that city an epidemic disorder, making dreadful havoc among the inhabitants.

在那個(gè)城市正流行傳染病，大部分居民受到了感染。

The road to the palace gate was covered with the sick and dying, lying on the ground at the moment the nabob was about to pass.

當(dāng)王子要經(jīng)過(guò)王宮大門(mén)的時(shí)候，道路上到處躺著生病和垂死的人。

Regardless of the suffering he must cause, the nabob held on his way, not caring whether his beast trod upon the poor helpless creatures or not.

王子騎著象繼續(xù)趕路，毫不顧及會(huì)不會(huì)踩到人，也不管會(huì)帶來(lái)多大的痛苦。

But the animal, more kind-hearted than his master, carefully cleared the path of the poor, helpless wretches as he went along.

可是大象比它的主人善良，一邊走一邊小心地清理道路，移開(kāi)那些可憐的、無(wú)助的、不幸的人。

Some he lifted with his trunk, entirely out of the road.

它用鼻子把一些人挪到路邊，

Some he set upon their feet, and among the others he stepped so carefully that not an individual was injured.

又使另外一些人站起來(lái)。小心翼翼地走在余下的人中間，沒(méi)傷到一個(gè)人。
