Now Hugh and the stranger had not gone much further, when they met a company of soldiers, gayly dressed, with feathers in their caps, and glittering muskets on their shoulders.

休和陌生人沒(méi)走多遠(yuǎn)，看見(jiàn)一隊(duì)士兵，衣著華麗，帽子上插著羽毛，肩膀上扛著閃閃發(fā)光的毛瑟槍。

In front marched the drummers and fifers, making such merry music that Hugh would gladly have followed them to the end of the world.

隊(duì)伍前面走著鼓手和吹橫笛的人，聽(tīng)著歡快的音樂(lè)，休心里想，就是跟著他們到天涯海角也行。

If he were only a soldier, he said to himself, old Mr. Toil would never venture to look him in the face.

如果當(dāng)個(gè)士兵，老特勞先生永遠(yuǎn)也不敢朝他看了。

"Quickstep! forward! march!" shouted a gruff voice.

“快步走！齊步走！踏步走！”一個(gè)粗啞的聲音喊道。

Little Hugh started in great dismay; for this voice sounded precisely like that which he had heard every day in Mr. Toil's schoolroom.

休嚇了一跳，這個(gè)聲音聽(tīng)起來(lái)和特勞先生的聲音完全一樣。

And turning his eyes to the captain of the company, what should he see but the very image of old Mr. Toil himself, in an officer's dress, to be sure, but looking as ugly and disagreeable as ever.

再看領(lǐng)隊(duì)，竟然是特勞先生本人，穿著軍官的服裝，可是看起來(lái)和以前一樣又丑又不令人愉快。

"This is certainly old Mr. Toil," said Hugh, in a trembling voice.

“這肯定是老特勞先生，”休聲音顫抖地說(shuō)道，

Let us away, for fear he should make us enlist in his company.

我們走吧，我害怕他會(huì)讓我們參加他的軍隊(duì)。

"You are mistaken again, my little friend," replied the stranger very composedly.

“你又錯(cuò)了，我的小朋友，”陌生人沉著地回答，

This is only a brother of Mr. Toil's, who has served in the army all his life.

這只是特勞先生的一個(gè)兄弟，他一生都在軍隊(duì)里。

You and I need not be afraid of him.

你用不著怕他。

"Well, well," said Hugh, "if you please, sir, I don't want to see the soldiers any more."

“好吧，好吧，”休說(shuō)，“先生，求您了，我不想再看這些士兵。”

So the child and the stranger resumed their journey;

于是休和陌生人繼續(xù)他們的旅行，

and, after awhile, they came to a house by the roadside, where a number of young men and rosy-cheeked girls, with smiles on their faces, were dancing to the sound of a fiddle.

不久，他們看到路邊有一戶(hù)人家，幾個(gè)少年和一個(gè)臉色紅撲撲的女孩，正隨著小提琴的演奏起舞。
