The European Commission’s incoming president Ursula von der Leyen has warned off challenging times ahead as the new British conservative leader Boris Johnson prepares to become prime minister. His promise to take Britain out of the EU by the end of October come what may. Mr. Johnson wants to renegotiate the withdrawal deal agreed by his predecessor but European leaders have said that’s not possible.

The US Senate has voted to confirm Mark Esper as defense secretary. The post has been vacant for longer than ever before in the Pentagon’s history following the resignation of Jim Mattis last year. Mr. Esper receives support from republican and democratic senators.

Police in Spain are investigating the death of Juan Carlos Márquez, a former executive at Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA. Police said Mr.Márquez had been found hanged in a flat near Madrid on Sunday. Two days earlier, he had appeared in court over his alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme.

A Gambian soldier who was part of an elite guard during the former president Yahya Jammeh’s rule has admitted participation in the execution of around 50 migrants in 2005. Most were from Ghana. Investigators have accused Yahya Jammeh of ordering the killings as he feared the migrants had come to overthrow him.

Authorities in Singapore have seized about $50 million worth of elephant ivories and pangolin scales following a tip-off by China. Customs officers in Singapore intercepted about nine tons of ivory which came from nearly 300 African elephants. In the same shipment were 12 tons of pangolin scales.
