Sometimes he pitches from the summit of a tree,begins his song as soon as he gets upon the wing,

食米鳥常常落在樹梢，一旦梳理好翅膀，便開始亮開歌喉，

and flutters tremulously down to the earth, as if overcome with ecstasy at his own music.

它不時(shí)朝地面猛力拍打雙翼，仿佛在自己歌聲里陶醉忘形；

Sometimes he is in pursuit of his mate; always in full song,

它自然喜歡追求配偶，開口吟唱那些高亢曲調(diào)，

as if he would win her by his melody; and always with the same appearance of intoxication and delight.

好像唯有音歟相求，才能獲取配偶芳心，當(dāng)然，它那一副陶醉自得的快樂神情讓人忍俊不禁。

Of all the birds of our groves and meadows, the bobolink was the envy of my boyhood.

北美森林莽莽草原上所有鳥類，食米鳥是我孩提時(shí)代最為嫉妒的鳥。

He crossed my path in the sweetest weather, and the sweetest season of the year,

It seemed as if the little varlet mocked at me as he flew by in full song, and sought to taunt me with his happier lot. Oh, how I envied him!
