A soldier of the Legion lay dying in Algiers, There was lack of woman’s nursing, there was dearth of woman’s tears;

一位德國(guó)軍團(tuán)士兵，在阿爾及爾戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)上瀕臨死亡，那里缺醫(yī)少藥，缺少醫(yī)護(hù)照料，他的血快要流盡了。

But a comrade stood beside him, while his lifeblood ebbed away, And bent, with pitying glances, to hear what he might say.

站在他身邊的同伴，眼里滿是悲哀，彎下身想聽聽他的最后遺言。

The dying soldier faltered, as he took that comrade’s hand, And he said: I nevermore shall see my own, my native land;

這時(shí)，那位垂死的士兵抓住同伴的手，顫抖地對(duì)他說：我再也見不到我家鄉(xiāng)的土地了，

Take a message and a token to some distant friends of mine, For I was born at Bingen,—at Bingen on the Rhine.

請(qǐng)捎個(gè)消息回去，再帶個(gè)物件，轉(zhuǎn)交我遠(yuǎn)方的朋友，我出生在賓根，——萊茵河畔的賓根。

Tell my brothers and companions, when they meet and crowd around To hear my mournful story in the pleasant vineyard ground,

當(dāng)我的父老鄉(xiāng)親聚集到家鄉(xiāng)那個(gè)美麗的葡萄園時(shí)，他們將聽到我的噩耗，請(qǐng)告訴家鄉(xiāng)的朋友們，

That we fought the battle bravely, and when the day was done, Full many a corse lay ghastly pale beneath the setting sun;

And, ’mid the dead and dying, were some grown old in wars,—The death wound on their gallant breasts, the last of many scars;
