Disney to revive Indiana Jones series（376 words）

Walt Disney is reviving the Indiana Jones series with plans to release a fifth movie in 2019 featuring Harrison Ford as the swashbuckling archaeologist.

Rights to the series were included in Disney's 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm. The four previous Indiana Jones films have generated close to $2bn at global box offices. Steven Spielberg, who directed the other movies, would return for the fifth instalment, Disney said.

Mr Ford would also return to star in the movie although he would be 77 when the new film was released, raising questions about the mobility of the lead character.

Disney paid $4bn for Lucasfilm, primarily for the rights to Star Wars. The Force Awakens, its first Star Wars film — and the seventh in the series — has generated more than $2bn at the global box office since it was released in December.

The Lucasfilm deal was part of a move by Disney to focus on brands and established intellectual property to reduce the risk attached to costly film productions.

Disney acquired Pixar in 2005 and Marvel Studios in 2010, deals which have helped fill a pipeline of films that are producing more stable returns.

“We used to have huge volatility in our movie studio,” Bob Iger, chief executive, told the Financial Times last week. “It could make $200m one year and $800m the next. Now, there will be some fluctuation, like a big Star Wars movie in a given year, but [the returns] are going to be much more steady. And they will deliver to our bottom line.”

The company has a spin-off Star Wars movie, Rogue One, due for release in December and an eighth Star Wars film in the works for 2018.

However, the company has not abandoned original ideas: Zootopia, its latest animated film, has broken box office records around the world. The group's animation studio has been revived under the leadership of John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, the co-founders of Pixar.

Frozen broke box office records and won the Oscar for best animated film in 2014. A sequel is in the works. Frozen is also being developed into a Broadway show, with Disney hoping to repeat the success of its Lion King musical, which has grossed more than $6bn worldwide over the past 18 years.
