我不愿意中斷這場(chǎng)辯論的進(jìn)程，這場(chǎng)辯論以溫和而高雅的方式進(jìn)行，

by men who do not suffer the ardor of opposition to cloud their reason,

參加辯論的人們不堪忍受對(duì)方的狂熱致使其失去理性，

or transport them to such expressions as the dignity of this assembly does not admit.

I have hitherto deferred answering the gentleman, who declaimed against the bill with such fluency and rhetoric, and such vehemence of gesture;

who charged the advocates for the expedients now proposed, with having no regard to any interests but their own,

how little the clamor of rage and petulancy of invective contribute to the end for which this assembly is called together;

how little the discovery of truth is promoted, and the security of the nation established, by pompous diction and theatrical emotion.

對(duì)于發(fā)現(xiàn)真理和確立國(guó)家安全來說，通過夸張的言辭和威脅的神情也毫無意義。

Formidable sounds and furious declamation, confident assertions and lofty periods, may affect the young and inexperienced;

可怕的喧囂和用慷慨激昂的演說來宣泄狂怒，有自信心的主張和表現(xiàn)出高高在上的傲慢，也許會(huì)影響年輕人和無甚經(jīng)驗(yàn)的人;
