在英美等國家的服務性行業(yè)中,一般都有付小費的習慣。這種習俗起源于18世紀的英國,據(jù)說當時的一些酒店和理發(fā)店通常在其桌上放著一個小盒子,上面寫著To insure prompt service(保證立刻服務)。顧客若放進少許零錢,便可得到迅速而周到的服務。后來人們將to insure prompt service的第一個字母抽出來放在一起,便拼湊了一個新詞,這就是我們大家熟悉的tips—“小費”。tip這個詞既可以用作名詞(可數(shù)),也可以用作動詞,先請看幾個實例:
