1　a number of 相當(dāng)于many，意為“許多”或“若干”，也可以說a large/ great number of或a small number of（不多），后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞或代詞，謂語動詞用復(fù)數(shù)。

I have a large number of books to read. 我有許多書要讀。

Only a small number of students like the film. 僅有一小部分學(xué)生喜歡這部電影。

2　the number of 表示“……的總數(shù)”，of 后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞。在這個結(jié)構(gòu)中，the number是主語，謂語動詞要用單數(shù)。

The number of students in this class are 40. （誤）

The number of students in this class is 40. （正）這個班的人數(shù)是40 。
