The first thing you learn when you begin engagement ring shopping is the four C's of diamonds: cut, color, clarity, and carats. Which of these is responsible for your stone's sparkle? Philip Press of Philip Press MasterPlatinumsmiths says, "The cut is the single determining factor that causes a diamond to sparkle. For a diamond to have the most brilliance, it needs to be proportioned properly and have a superior polish." That means a stone with a bigger surface area (width) isn't necessarily better than a smaller stone with adequate depth to reflect light and create sparkle.

Choose Your Stone Shape, but Let Him Pick the Rest
The ring-buying process should be fun for your guy, not a chore. To help him out without overwhelming him, jeweler Jean Dousset of Jean Dousset Diamonds says, "Let him know what you want [in terms of] diamond cut and design and then leave it up to him to surprise you as much as possible." Since the stone size and clarity are often a function of the budget, limit your directions to elements that aren't affected by the price, like a specific cut or setting style you like.
There's More to an Engagement Ring Than the Diamond
When we think of engagement rings, we often focus on the stone, but the setting is what really determines the final product. If you can't have the carat weight of your dreams, focus on creating a setting you love instead. Paul Tacorian of Tacori says, "It's really about the design and the style of the ring. You want to get her a diamond that is beautiful, but the design is a representation of who she is and her personal style."
White Gold or Platinum?
While both are great choices, Press says that white gold is "not as durable as platinum." If you're worried about scratches and wear and tear, platinum may be the better choice. But keep in mind, "it is also 60 percent heavier than gold."
Which Shape Is Right for You?
Just like shopping for a wedding dress, Dousset suggests you "visit some jewelry stores to get familiar with the different shapes. Choosing the right cut will always be an instinctive decision. If you always revert to the same cut, it is the one."
Compare Rings Within Your Budget
Since no two stones are alike (cut, clarity, color, and carat dramatically affect the pricing of a ring), it's best to compare a few that are all within your budget. "Seeing rings you can ultimately afford will enable you to compare 'apples to apples' when you shop," says Dousset.
To Halo or Not to Halo?
While this is a matter of personal preference, Press says, "Some people think solitaire is a much more classic, traditional style. The halo setting certainly makes the diamond look larger and more impressive and adds another style element to the ring."
Should You Splurge on Color or Clarity?
"A lot of people are concerned with clarity when they think about the quality of the diamond. Clarity is probably one of the least important factors. As long as the diamond is 100 percent clean to the naked eye, that is perfectly acceptable to the majority of people," says Press. "Color is something you can see straight away with the naked eye." Many people prefer to stay at a G or an H in color or above to ensure the stone doesn't appear yellow.
