The animals need to save energy as they get very little nutrition from their diet of bamboo and their thyroid glands is one of a series of features that slow them down. Even when moving around, a giant panda uses just half the amount of energy as a stationary human.
Pandas spend many of their waking hours munching bamboo – but their digestive system originally evolved to digest meat like other bears - is poorly adapted to digest it. Scientists from The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Aberdeen University calculated that they get so little energy from the bamboo they spend all day eating that they need to conserve as much as they can.
The scientists studied the daily energy expenditure of pandas – five captive and three wild ones - and found it was just 38 per cent of that of a similar animal of the same body mass. Pandas expend around only slightly more energy than famously lazy three-toed sloths.
