A PIGEON(鴿子)

A pigeon, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard. Not supposing it to be only a picture, she flew towards it with a loud whir and unwittingly dashed against the signboard, jarring herself terribly. Having broken her wings by the blow, she fell to the ground, and was caught by one of the bystanders.

Moral:Zeal should not outrun discretion.

一只鴿子口渴得很難受,看見畫板上畫著一只水杯。她并不以為那只是一幅畫,而是發(fā)出一聲響亮的呼嚕聲,朝畫飛去,無意中撞在了招牌上,把自己撞得很不穩(wěn)。她的翅膀被風(fēng)吹斷了,摔在地上,被一個(gè)旁觀者抓住。

寓意:熱情不應(yīng)超過謹(jǐn)慎。

The Raven and the Swan(烏鴉和天鵝)

A raven saw a Swan and desired to secure for himself the same beautiful plumage. Supposing that the Swan's splendid white color arose from his washing in the water in which he swam,.

the Raven left the altars in the neighborhood where he picked up his living, and took up residence in the lakes and pools. But cleansing his feathers as often as he would, he could not change their color, while through want of food he perished.

Moral:Change of habit cannot alter Nature.

一只烏鴉看到了一只天鵝,想要得到同樣美麗的羽毛。假如天鵝的美麗的白色是由于它在水里游泳時(shí)洗過澡而產(chǎn)生的。

那么烏鴉就離開它生活的地方,到湖里和水潭里去住下來。但是,盡管他經(jīng)常清洗自己的羽毛,卻無法改變它們的顏色,而由于缺乏食物,他就死了。

寓意:人的本性不會(huì)隨著生活方式的改變而改變。

The Bat and the Weasels(蝙蝠與黃鼠狼)

Abat who fell upon the ground and was caught by a Weasel pleaded to be spared his life. The Weasel refused, saying that he was by nature the enemy of all birds.

The Bat assured him that he was not a bird, but a mouse, and thus was set free. Shortly afterwards the Bat again fell to the ground and was caught by another Weasel, whom he likewise entreated not to eat him. The Weasel said that he had a special hostility to mice. The Bat assured him that he was not a mouse, but a bat, and thus a second time escaped.

Moral:It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.

一只蝙蝠墜落到地上,被黃鼠狼叼去,他請(qǐng)求饒命。黃鼠狼拒絕了,說他生來就是鳥類的天敵。

蝙蝠向他保證他不是一只鳥,而是一只老鼠,于是就被放了出來。不一會(huì)兒,蝙蝠又掉到地上,被另一只黃鼠狼捉住了,他請(qǐng)求討?zhàn)垺|S鼠狼說他特別恨老鼠。蝙蝠向他保證自己不是老鼠,而是一只蝙蝠,因此第二次逃走了。

寓意:我們遇事要隨機(jī)應(yīng)變方能避免危險(xiǎn)。

The Ass and the Grasshopper(驢子與蚱蜢)

An ass having heard some Grasshoppers chirping, was highly enchanted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody, demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such beautiful voices. They replied, "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would live only upon dew, and in a short time died of hunger.

Moral:People should not expect anything out of proportion.
