Gui Minhai is one of five booksellers residing in the Chinese territory of Hong Kong who went missing in 2015 after publishing or selling titles critical of leaders from China’s ruling Communist party, a turn of events which increased fears over Beijing’s curbing of freedom of speech in the semi-autonomous city.
He resurfaced on state-TV in 2016 confessing to a drink-driving charge, confirming that he had been taken to mainland China. He was released late last year but has been kept under tight surveillance within China, according to reports.
Mr Gui was “seized by the Chinese authorities during an ongoing consular support session last Saturday,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
“Chinese authorities have repeatedly assured us that Gui Minhai is a free man since he was released after a penalty for a traffic-related crime, and that we can have the contacts desired with our citizens,” the statement said, adding that the ministry expected Mr Gui to be released immediately.
Asked about Mr Gui’s situation on Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters at a regular press conference that: “We hope that any foreigners in China, including foreign diplomats, can observe international and Chinese laws”.
Her remarks on Mr Gui were expunged from the official transcript of the press conference.
