Making Friends
In America, once I get a friend, I'm careful not to presume on him/her. This is because Americans are very concerned about "bothering" others, even though they may be good friends.
One woman has said that "Irish people live in each other's pockets. But it's completely different here. You keep your distance." Since I am very hesitant to ask friends for favors, I make a lot of good friends here. If I were demanding, my prospective friends would likely back off as neediness scares people. We prefer friends who can make their requests rare and reasonable.
