Reasons for Intonation 語調(diào)變化的原因

1. New Information
新信息

It sounds like rain.
Rain is the new information. It's the most important word in the sentence.
Rain(雨)是新的信息，是這個句子中最重要的單詞。

2. Opinion
觀點

It sounds like rain, but I don't think it is.
In this case, intonation makes the meaning the opposite of what the words say.
在這個句子里，語調(diào)使它的意思正好與字面意思相反。

3. Contrast
對比

He likes rain, but he hates snow.
Like and hate are contrasted and are the stronger words in the sentence.
like和hate正好形成對比，是這個句子里最有力的兩個單詞。

4. Negative
否定

The rain didn't affect his plans, though.
Didn't negate the meanings of the following words.
Didn't正好否定了它后面謂語動詞的意思。
