我們上一次講了由penny 也就是分幣組成的幾個(gè)習(xí)慣用語。美國(guó)人用的硬幣除了 penny 還有好幾種。例如，價(jià)值比penny高一點(diǎn)兒的有五分和一毛的硬幣。它們是:

nickel and dime。不論Nickel還是dime都是零碎小錢，人們通常認(rèn)為是瑣碎而無足輕重的。我們今天要學(xué)的第一個(gè)習(xí)慣用語正是nickel and dime。讓我們從下面這個(gè)例子來體會(huì)這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語的含義。

例句-1：Joe wanted to be his own boss but he had only enough money to open up a little newspaper stand. Just a nickel and dime business but he hopes it's the start of something bigger.

他說：Joe 想要自己當(dāng)老板，但是他手頭的錢僅夠擺一個(gè)小報(bào)攤。雖然只是小本經(jīng)營(yíng)，但是他希望這是大買賣的起點(diǎn)。

可見nickel and dime意思就是“瑣碎而微不足道的”。

例句-3： I wish I had the money to buy a sports car, one of those convertibles with good steering that lets you turn on a dime and good brakes that make you stop on a dime.

例句-4：Peter, I can't wait any longer for you to decide whether you want to sign the contract. You have to get off the dime today - otherwise we'll go to some other company.

他說：Peter， 我再也不能等你決定要不要簽?zāi)欠莺霞s了；你今天就得當(dāng)機(jī)立斷，否則我們就找其它公司了。

所以get off the dime意思是不再遲疑、作出決斷。
