英語里有不少成語和俗語都是和人體各個(gè)部份的名稱相聯(lián)系的，有的和頭，有的和眼睛、鼻子、手和腳有關(guān)的。今天我們?cè)僦v兩個(gè)和脖子有關(guān)的俗語。第一個(gè)是 pain in the neck。Pain 這個(gè)字大家都知道是痛的意思。 Neck 是指脖子。但是，pain in the neck 并不是脖子痛的意思，pain in the neck 是說某人很討厭。這個(gè)俗語非常普遍，你每天都可以聽到美國人這么說: "He's a real pain in the neck." 這就是說："那個(gè)人真討厭。"下面這個(gè)例子是一個(gè)飯館的老板在說某個(gè)顧客：

例句-1:"I want to run and hide every time I see that woman come into my place. A real pain in the neck; she's always complaining about the food and the service."

這位老板說："每當(dāng)我看到那個(gè)女人來到我飯館的時(shí)候，我總是想拔腿就跑，到什么地方去躲起來。她可真是討厭，老是抱怨不是飯菜不好，就是服務(wù)不好。"

Pain in the neck 不是一定要針對(duì)別人說的，有時(shí)還可以用在自己身上。我們來舉個(gè)例子。下面是一個(gè)很不高興的爸爸在對(duì)兒子說話：

例句-2:"I don't want to be a pain in the neck, son, but I've reminded you a dozen times already to clean up your room. Better do it tonight, or you can't use the car this weekend."

這個(gè)爸爸說："兒子，我并不想讓你討厭，但是我已經(jīng)提醒你幾十次了，要你把房間整理乾凈。你還是今天晚上把房間打掃干凈的好，否則，這個(gè)周末你就別想用汽車。"

下面我們要介紹的一個(gè)和 neck 有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語是 neck and neck。 Neck and neck 是指比賽進(jìn)行得很激烈，競(jìng)爭(zhēng)雙方不相上下。 Neck and neck 這個(gè)說法原先是來自比賽，如賽跑、賽馬等。就拿賽馬來說吧，有的時(shí)候兩匹馬齊頭并進(jìn)，很難分辨出那匹馬在前頭，那一匹在后頭。在有的情況下，一匹馬由于它的脖子比另一匹馬先到終點(diǎn)而獲勝，還有的時(shí)候甚至由于它的頭，或它的鼻子先到而成了冠軍。但是，neck and neck 現(xiàn)在也經(jīng)常用在別的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)方面，下面這個(gè)例子就能說明這一點(diǎn)：

例句-3:"Right now, only a week from the election, the republicans and the democrats are running neck to neck and none of the experts can predict which party will win."

這句話的意思是："現(xiàn)在離開選舉只有一個(gè)星期了，但是，共和黨和民主黨在競(jìng)選方面仍然不分上下，沒有一個(gè)專家能預(yù)測(cè)到底那個(gè)黨會(huì)在競(jìng)選中獲勝。"

Neck and neck 有時(shí)還可以用在其他場(chǎng)合，就拿我們廣播的這課「美國習(xí)慣用語」來做例子吧：

例句-4:"I'm running neck and neck with the clock to see if I can finish on time."

這句話的意思是："這次節(jié)目的時(shí)間已經(jīng)很緊了，我正在加緊播送，不知能不能在限定時(shí)間內(nèi)播完這次節(jié)目。"
