老板Tom的班機(jī)因?yàn)榕_(tái)風(fēng)來(lái)襲而停飛，從機(jī)場(chǎng)打電話給秘書Susan布置工作。

Tom: And if you don't mind, call our factory in China and see if things are OK there. I'm worried about flooding.

S: Sure thing, boss.

T: I'll tell you what, I'll call back in an hour or so and we'll touch base again, good?

S: Absolutely. Good luck and stay safe!

T: Thanks, Susan.

(Hang up phone sound)

Tom讓Susan打電話給公司設(shè)在中國(guó)的工廠，看看那里有沒(méi)有發(fā)水，還說(shuō)自己一小時(shí)后再打電話給Susan, "We'll touch base again," 相互通報(bào)一下情況。 To touch base意思是碰頭，聯(lián)絡(luò)，交換一下最新情況。Susan說(shuō)sure thing，意思是沒(méi)問(wèn)題。

(Phone ringing)

T: Oh, hello Susan. I thought we said we'd wait an hour.

S: I just got off the line with the factory and it's flooding pretty bad down there. They said the water has almost reached half a meter!

T: Darn it! I thought we'd solved the flooding problem. Tell them to get the precision machinery off the ground floor and see if they can't use sandbags to stop any more water coming in.

結(jié)果沒(méi)到一小時(shí)，Susan就心急火燎地打電話給Tom. 原來(lái)是Susan剛剛got off the line with the factory，跟工廠聯(lián)系剛掛上電話，get off the line，是掛電話的意思。Tom擔(dān)心得一點(diǎn)沒(méi)錯(cuò)，工廠果然在發(fā)水，已經(jīng)快半米高了。Tom讓他們趕緊把precision machinery，精密儀器搬到樓上去，然后用sandbags，沙袋，想辦法把水堵在外面。

S: Ok. There are a couple of people from the head office there. I'll ask them to take charge and try to limit the damage as much as possible.

T: The last time it flooded we lost one of our production lines for almost three weeks! We can't afford that again. Tell them to spare no effort to keep the water out of the production area!

S: Will do. What about your flight? Any word?

T: Not yet...oh, wait a second...they are announcing something about my flight...I'll call you right back.

S: Ok.

(Sound of phone hang up)

Susan說(shuō)，總部head office有幾個(gè)人正在工廠那邊，可以讓他們負(fù)責(zé)to take charge，盡量減少損失。Tom說(shuō)，上次發(fā)水公司就有一條生產(chǎn)線停工將近三個(gè)星期，We can't afford that again，我們?cè)僖渤惺懿黄疬@樣的損失了。所以tell them to spare no effort...，告訴他們想盡一切辦法，堅(jiān)決不能讓水進(jìn)到車間里去。

Susan最后問(wèn)Tom的班機(jī)有沒(méi)有消息。 Any word? 相當(dāng)于is there any word on your flight? Word，在這里是消息的意思。Tom說(shuō)，他們好象正在宣布什么，所以就先掛了電話，Tom的工廠會(huì)受到嚴(yán)重?fù)p失嗎？我們下次繼續(xù)聽(tīng)。
