Jay: I've been noticing all sorts of Valentine's Day
advertisements on the street lately.
Catherine: Yeah, Western Valentine's Day is almost here.
You know, Taiwanese businesses really know
how to make money. Valentine's Day is a great
opportunity for them.
Jay : Oh yeah, you guys have two valentine's days a
year, don't you?
Catherine: Yup. Businesses can earn twice as much
money... just kidding. I'm impressed, you already
know Taiwan has two valentine's days. You've
really become quite immersed in our culture.
...
Jay: I guess but anyway, I don't really know the
source of your other Valentine's Day.
Catherine: Oh, we celebrate it on the seventh day of the
seventh month on the lunar calendar. We call
it "Seventh Night." According to myth, the Jade
Emperor's daughter "Girl Weaver" fell in love with
an ordinary man named "Cowherd." Together,
they had two children. However, a celestial
woman is not allowed to be with an ordinary man.
Thus, the supreme deity took her up into the
sky, separating her from Cowherd and their two
children.
Jay: Oh...that's so sad.
Catherine: But afterwards, the Jade Emperor felt bad for them
and let them see each other one time on the seventh
day of the seventh month of the year. On that day,
Jay: Are there many of them?
the two would embrace and weep. Therefore, even

Jay: So, is Taoism the most popular religion here?
Catherine: So, what do you plan to do for Valentine's Day?
Catherine: Well, that depends on how you look at it.
Jay: Ehh, I don't know. I'll probably stay at home and

Are there many Christians?
Catherine: Yes, in fact, it is the third most popular religion.
Jay: Wow, that's an eye opener.
