    In former times, the property that a bride brought with her to
marriage was called her dowry. It was believed that a substantial dowry
 would enhance the bride's position as a spouse, strengthen
inter-family ties, and serve as a financial base for the newlyweds.
Although dowries are no longer common in most of the societies now, the
 bride's parents often pay the wedding expenses.
