　　北京是中華人民共和國(guó)的首都，也是全國(guó)的政治和文化中心。大約70萬(wàn)年前，北京人(Peking Man)出現(xiàn)在北京西南48公里的周口店地區(qū)。十世紀(jì)初期，北京成為遼代(the LiaoDynasty)的第二個(gè)都城。從那時(shí)起，北京先后成為金、元、明和清四朝的首都，直至1911年。1949年10月1日，毛主席在北京向全世界宣布了中華人民共和國(guó)的成立。北京人口超過(guò)2000萬(wàn)，大約1000萬(wàn)人住在城里，其他人住在郊區(qū)。
