A 7-year-old from Chennai in eastern India had complained of pain and swelling in his jaw since he was 3 — but this was no normal toothache.
When his parents — mom Rajakumari, 33, and father Parbhu, 40 — took their increasingly distressed little boy to Saveetha Dental College earlier this month, doctors discovered something far more disturbing: 526 teeth embedded in his tiny jawbone.

Doctors said it took mere moments to get permission to operate from his parents — but their son Ravindran required several hours of cajoling before giving in.
Five hours of exploratory surgery later, oral surgeons extracted a bloody, calcified mass from his right jaw, the Times of India reported.
On Wednesday, a still-recovering Ravindran climbed into his father’s arms and smiled shyly for the assembled media cameras.
“No pain,” he said, touching his slightly swollen jaw.
Doctors told reporters they’re unsure of what caused the growth, a condition called compound composite odontoma. They cited everything from radiation exposure from mobile towers to basic genetics as potential reasons.
“The teeth were in different sizes,” said Dr. Prathibha Ramani, the operating maxillofacial pathologist. “They looked like pearls in an oyster. Even the smallest piece had a crown, root and an enamel coating like a tooth.”
The time-lapse video above shows the assorted teeth — ranging in size from tiny kernels to adult-sized choppers — being placed in a spiral pattern against a green surgical sheet.
“Instead of breaking open the bone from the sides and leaving a large hole, we drilled into it from the top,” another doctor identified only as Senthilnathan said. “He did not require any reconstruction of the jaw.”
In the end, docs were able to preserve all 21 of Ravindran’s normal teeth — and the surgery was performed free of charge.
