　　第二十四章 誠(chéng)意--不能只做到自我完善

　　“誠(chéng)者，自成也;而道，自道也。誠(chéng)者，物之終始，不誠(chéng)無(wú)物。是故君子誠(chéng)之為貴。誠(chéng)者，非自成己而已也，所以成物也。成己，仁也;成物，知也。性之德也，合外內(nèi)之道也，故時(shí)措之宜也。

　　Sincerity is that whereby self-completion is effected, and its way is that by which man must direct himself.

　　Sincerity is the end and beginning of things; without sincerity there would be nothing. On this account, the superior man regards the attainment of sincerity as the most excellent thing.

　　The possessor of sincerity does not merely accomplish the self-completion of himself. With this quality he completes other men and things also. The completing himself shows his perfect virtue. The completing other men and things shows his knowledge. But these are virtues belonging to the nature, and this is the way by which a union is effected of the external and internal. Therefore, whenever he-the entirely sincere man-employs them,-that is, these virtues, their action will be right.

　　誠(chéng)者，自成也(1);而道，自道也(2)。誠(chéng)者，物之終始，不誠(chéng)無(wú)物。是故君于誠(chéng)之為貴。誠(chéng)者，非自成己而已也(3)，所以成物也。 成己，仁也;成物，知也。性之德也，合外內(nèi)之道也，故時(shí)措(4)之宜也。

　　【注釋】

　　(1)自成：自我成全，也就是自我完善的意思。(2)自道(dao)：自我。

　　【譯文】

　　真誠(chéng)是自我的完善，道是自我的引導(dǎo)。真誠(chéng)是事物的發(fā)端和歸宿，沒(méi)有真誠(chéng)就沒(méi)有了事物。因此君子以真誠(chéng)為貴。不過(guò)，真誠(chéng)并不是自我完善就夠了，而是還要完善事物。自我完善是仁，完善事物是智。仁和智是出于本性的德行，是融合自身與外物的準(zhǔn)則，所以任何時(shí)候施行都是適宜的。

　　這里把智、仁與真誠(chéng)的修養(yǎng)結(jié)合起來(lái)了。因?yàn)?，真誠(chéng)從大的方面來(lái)說(shuō)，是事物的根本規(guī)律，是事物的發(fā)端和歸宿;真誠(chéng)從細(xì)的方面來(lái)說(shuō)，是自我的內(nèi)心完善。所以，要修養(yǎng)真誠(chéng)就必須做到物我同一，天人合一。而要做到這一點(diǎn)既要靠學(xué)習(xí)來(lái)理解，又要靠實(shí)踐來(lái)實(shí)現(xiàn)。

　　這里最值得注意的是真誠(chéng)的外化問(wèn)題，也就是說(shuō)，真誠(chéng)不僅僅像我們一般所理解的是一種主觀內(nèi)在的品質(zhì)，自我的道德完善，而是還要外化到他人和一切事物當(dāng)中去。作一個(gè)形象的比喻，倒正好用得上我們以前常愛(ài)引用的那句話：“只有解放全人類，才能最終徹底解放無(wú)產(chǎn)階級(jí)自己。”

　　自己解放了，全人類都解放了，世界也就大同了。自己真誠(chéng)了，他人真誠(chéng)了，真誠(chéng)無(wú)處不在，無(wú)時(shí)不有，世界也就美好無(wú)欺了。

　　說(shuō)到底，還是真誠(chéng)的奇妙神功。
