第一章 并列平行結構(二)
英語句子最常用的方法是通過使用一些關聯(lián)詞，如 and、or等，或標點符號如：分號，逗號，破折號等，若干個在語義上有聯(lián)系或相互照應的單詞、詞組或子句連在一起組成一種并列或平行結構的長句，以表達一個復雜得多層次含義。這種句式雖然難度不一定很高，但在復雜長句中還是占了相當大的比例的.
從今天開始我們就由淺入深，來對這一類型的句子進行練習和攻克。希望大家通過練習能掌握分析這類句式的一般規(guī)律和方法。
Classroom ：
1. More than three million people live in inner London,and nearly five million people live in the surrounding suburban area,which is made up of formerly separate villages that have merged to form what is now called outer London.
要 點：全句為并列復合句。“and”連接并列句。第二個句子是主從復合句。“which”引出非限制性定語從句，修飾“area”。“that”引出限制性定語從句，修飾“villages”。“what”引出名詞從句，作“from”的賓語。
參考譯文：三百多萬人口居住在倫敦市區(qū)，將近五百多萬人口居住在周圍的郊區(qū)——該地區(qū)由原來分散的村莊構成，逐步形成如今被稱為的外倫敦。
2. Then I remembered how often I,too,had been indifferent to the grander of each day,too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to the splendor of it all.
要 點：此句存在著一個“too…to…”結構，即“too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to the splendor of it all”。注意：“I,too,had been indifferent to the grander of each day”中“too”的含義為“也”，請不要混淆。
參考譯文：然后我回想起自己過去也經常對每天的壯觀景象不感興趣，也經常一頭埋在細小的、有時甚至是卑鄙自私的事物中而對這整個奇觀麻木不仁。

要點分析和參考譯文：
1. 要 點：破折號后面not…or…結構相當于neither…nor…結構。
參考要點：人們只能猜測，如果他確實聽到了不少有關情況的話，這只能堅定他的決心：不能讓自己和新娘成為展覽品而丟人現(xiàn)眼——活著的時候不能這樣，死了也不行。
