[00:12]The mendicant [00:14]When I think how long I have lived [00:16]I am struck by life’s injustice: [00:19]Others have lived much less [00:21]Some have been given less than an hour of life. [00:24]I recall my childhood [00:26]And the various stages of my growth. [00:29]I have been blessed, indeed, beyond anything [00:32]I expected or deserved! [00:34]I think of the experiences that life has given me [00:37]—happy ones that filled my heart, [00:39]Painful ones that helped me grow— [00:42]Of the discoveries I have made... [00:44]Of the persons I was privileged to meet... [00:47]And of my talents and abilities, [00:49]Of sight [00:51]And hearing, [00:52]Smell and taste and touch [00:55]And mind and will and memory [00:57]And the limbs and organs of my body. [01:00]If I were to die today [01:02]I should certainly have had more than my fair share [01:05]Of life’s blessings. [01:08]Whatever else life has in store for me is an added gift [01:12]Quite undeserved. [01:14]Having accepted this, I make myself aware of the fact [01:17]That I have another day of life to live and relish. [01:21]I see myself go through the morning, [01:23]The afternoon, [01:25]And evening, [01:26]And accept my good luck gratefully. [01:28]I think of the person who to me is the dearest [01:31]Of all who are alive today, [01:34]Of how he or she has enriched my life. [01:37]Tomorrow I may lose her... [01:40]Such is life’s fragility. [01:42]And if I did, I should have no cause for complaint. [01:46]I have had her for so long, [01:48]God knows I have no right to her for a single hour. [01:52]Life has been unjust: [01:54]I think of those who never had [01:56]The riches she has brought me. [01:58]I tell her this in fantasy [02:01]And see what happens. [02:03]I now become aware [02:04]That she is here for yet another day [02:07]And I am grateful.
