[00:12]The mendicant [00:15]When I think how long I have lived [00:19]I am struck by life’s injustice: [00:22]Others have lived much less [00:25]Some have been given less than an hour of life. [00:29]I recall my childhood [00:32]And the various stages of my growth. [00:36]I have been blessed, indeed, beyond anything [00:40]I expected or deserved! [00:44]I think of the experiences that life has given me [00:48]—happy ones that filled my heart, [00:52]Painful ones that helped me grow— [00:55]Of the discoveries I have made... [00:58]Of the persons I was privileged to meet... [01:01]And of my talents and abilities, [01:04]Of sight [01:06]And hearing, [01:07]Smell and taste and touch [01:10]And mind and will and memory [01:14]And the limbs and organs of my body. [01:20]If I were to die today [01:23]I should certainly have had more than my fair share [01:27]Of life’s blessings. [01:30]Whatever else life has in store for me is an added gift [01:34]Quite undeserved. [01:38]Having accepted this, I make myself aware of the fact [01:43]That I have another day of life to live and relish. [01:48]I see myself go through the morning, [01:52]The afternoon, [01:53]And evening, [01:55]And accept my good luck gratefully. [01:58]I think of the person who to me is the dearest [02:03]Of all who are alive today, [02:06]Of how he or she has enriched my life. [02:11]Tomorrow I may lose her... [02:14]Such is life’s fragility. [02:17]And if I did, I should have no cause for complaint. [02:23]I have had her for so long, [02:26]God knows I have no right to her for a single hour. [02:32]Life has been unjust: [02:35]I think of those who never had [02:37]The riches she has brought me. [02:40]I tell her this in fantasy [02:43]And see what happens. [02:46]I now become aware [02:48]That she is here for yet another day [02:52]And I am grateful.
