[00:06.48]The Phantom of the Opera

[00:09.64]The Paris Opera House was a huge building with seventeen floors

[00:15.91]of which seven were below the ground.

[00:20.17]Underneath the building there was a strange, dark lake.

[00:25.31]In the middle of this lake was an island and on that island

[00:31.37]one hundred years ago

[00:34.53]When he was born he was so ugly that his own mother made him wear a mask

[00:40.70]and forced him to leave home while still a child.

[00:45.35]Years later he made a secret home for himself inside the Paris Opera House

[00:52.19]What a man he was!Strong enough to kill with his hands

[00:57.94]and yet he loved music and sang with a wonderful voice.

[01:02.80]He used this voice to gain power over Christine

[01:07.66]a beautiful young singer at the Opera.

[01:12.41]He often sang to herlate at night from behind a secret wall in her room.

[01:18.97]She thought at first that he must be an angel.

[01:23.33]The Phantom taught her how to sing

[01:27.28]and forced the Opera's two managers to give her better roles in their shows.

[01:33.05]At first the managers were certain that he did not exist.

[01:38.80]They said he was a joke.

[01:42.16]Then one night when the Opera was crowded with people

[01:47.73]the huge glass chandelier fell from the roof, injuring a woman.

[01:54.39]After that,it was not surprising that the managers obeyed the Phantom's wishes

[02:01.55]and gave Christine the main role.

[02:05.62]But the Phantom wanted Christine for himself.

[02:09.88]In the endhe kidnapped her from the stage,in front of the whole audience.

[02:16.54]He took her down to his secret home on the lake.

[02:20.59]Only one man was brave enough to follow.

[02:24.56]He was Raoul a young man who loved Christine.

[02:29.21]But the Phantom captured him and kept him in a prison

[02:33.65]which was slowly filling with water.

[02:38.30]In the Phantom's house, Christine pulled off his mask.

[02:43.55]She finally saw the real man,and his horrible face, with no nose and yellow eyes.

[02:51.81]At first she was shocked at his appearance but then she felt very sorry for him.

[02:58.86]She understood how lonely his life had been.

[03:03.09]She gently kissed his face.

[03:06.33]No woman had ever touched the Phantom before.

[03:11.01]Christine's kiss made him cry with joy.

[03:15.66]He released Raoul and told him to take Christine away to safety.

[03:21.72]By now, a group of other people had reached the Phantom's house

[03:27.18]and burst in ready to kill him.

[03:31.54]But at that moment the Phantom disappeared magically and was never seen again.
