I'm Briar, and I help Ted speakers prepare their talks. And here are three tips that you need to know.
Tip No. 1: lighting matters.
Good lighting can boost your credibility and help your audience read your emotions more clearly. So, put the light source directly behind the camera, so it's shining on your face. You'll look great. Ring lights are okay, but a lamp in a window, those will work just as well.
Tip No. 2: look at the lens of your camera as often as possible.
This is how you make direct eye contact with your virtual audience. And we know that direct eye contact can make you more persuasive, more engaging, and more trustworthy. So it is well worth your time to practice your presentation in advance, so you can keep your eyes up as much as possible.
Tip No. 3: if you're going to share slides, practice doing that in advance.
That way, you won't be that person that stops the presentation to say, "Oh, hang on, let me figure out how to share my slides now." Pro tip: once the slide is no longer relevant, take it down so that your virtual audience can see your big face on the big screen.
That's it for now. Good luck out there!
