[00:-1.00]Family is so important all through your life.

[00:-2.00]Sometimes,though,it is easy to take your family for granted.

[00:-3.00]Do you know what family stands for?

[00:-4.00]FAMILY=Father And Mother,I Love You!

[00:-5.00]of the elders will not be allowed to eat with the elders.

[00:-6.00]-African Proverb

[00:-7.00]SECTION 1 NEW WORDS AND IDEAS

[00:-8.00]Family Gathering

[00:-9.00]Put was given an assignment to write.

[00:10.00]Her topic was family. Here's what she has written.Enjoy it!

[00:11.00]I love long weekends because they are usually a time when our family gets together.

[00:12.00]I get the chance to see not only my immediate family, but also my aunts,

[00:13.00]uncles,cousins and grandparents.

[00:14.00]I always feel happy when I'm surrounded by family.

[00:15.00]This year,Grandma and Grandpa didn't bring Great-Grandma Porter with them.

[00:16.00]Even though Great-Grandma is 92 years old,

[00:17.00]she usually comes over on special occasions.

[00:18.00]But this weekend she wasn't feeling well.I worry a little about that.

[00:19.00]I wonder what it feels like to that old.I did miss seeing her.

[00:20.00]When she comes over we usually have a long talk.

[00:21.00]She likes to hear what I am doing at school and all that,

[00:22.00]but even more, she loves to tell me stories about her life.

[00:23.00]They are always the same stories,over and over again,but I don't mind.

[00:24.00]She gets so happy when she remembers them that they are fun to hear

[00:25.00]even after the hundredth time.

[00:26.00]My brother, also came home from university for the weekend.

[00:27.00]I never thought I would say it,but I enjoyed seeing him too.

[00:28.00]Things have changed a lot between me and my brother since we have gotten older.

[00:29.00]He used to annoy me most of the time when we were younger.

[00:30.00]I remember when he was in high school,

[00:31.00]he used to have his friends over all the time.

[00:32.00]They would hang around doing nothing except eating everything in the fridge.

[00:33.00]Then,as if that wasn't bad enough,they would leave dishes,wrappers,

[00:34.00]and pop cans all over the place.

[00:35.00]Mom eventually made him clean it up,of course,

[00:36.00]but it seemed like it was a never-ending circle.

[00:37.00]As soon as he cleaned up the mess from one group of friends,

[00:38.00]a couple more guys would come and the mess would start all over again.

[00:39.00]When I think about it,Jason is still pretty messy;it just doesn't bug me now.

[00:40.00]Now I'm just happy to see him and talk with him.

[00:41.00]Like most brothers and sisters,Jason and I had many fights as we were growing up,

[00:42.00]but we are really close.

[00:43.00]I can talk to him about things that I can't really talk about with my friends

[00:44.00]because he knowes my life in a way that no one else does.

[00:45.00]I miss him when he's away at school

[00:46.00]and it was so good to see him last weekend-chip bags and all!

[00:47.00]Dad and I were busy all week getting ready for the weekend.

[00:48.00]Mom was busy at work so Dad and I had to get the house ready for the company.

[00:49.00]We had to make up the spare beds and pull out the sleeping bags

[00:50.00]for all the young cousins who always sleep on the floor in the family room.

[00:51.00]I used to love that!

[00:52.00]I remember those nights when we had several cousins sleeping on the floor;

[00:53.00]we usually giggled and whispered all night long, while the adults played cards

[00:54.00]and talked in the kitchen.

[00:55.00]After the sleeping arrangements were completed,

[00:56.00]Dad and I went shopping for groceies.

[00:57.00]It sounds like a lot of work but with my dad, everything is fun.

[00:58.00]I have always felt close to my dad.

[00:59.00]Everyone arrived on Saturday morning.

[-1:00.00]My Aunt Donna brought a huge tray of her famous cookies and squares.

[-1:-1.00]They are so delicious!

[-1:-2.00]I always look forward to Aunt Donna's cookies and always eat too many of them.

[-1:-3.00]My other aunts brought food as well. [-1:-4.00]I helped Mom organize all the food and prepare the vegetables and snacks.

[-1:-5.00]My cousin,Michael, brought his guitar this time.

[-1:-6.00]He's 16 years old and a very good musician.

[-1:-7.00]We sat around singing with him for many hours.

[-1:-8.00]He can play all the current hits from the radio

[-1:-9.00]and he also knows many of the old songs,

[-1:10.00]which is good because then the parens and grandparents can sing along, too.

[-1:11.00]There is one song that he plays that is Grandpa's favourite.

[-1:12.00]All weekend, whenever Mike played this song,Grandpa would sing along.

[-1:13.00]Grandpa has a terrible voice.

[-1:14.00]Whenever he started singing,we would all laugh and tease him,

[-1:15.00]which made him sing even louder[-1:16.00]My grandpa has a great sense of humour and I love him very much.

[-1:17.00]I am very lucky to have such a wonderful family.

[-1:18.00]We all had a good time on the weekend

[-1:19.00]and now it's time to get back to our regular routines, until the next time.

[-1:20.00]Family is so important all through your life.

[-1:21.00]Sometimes,though,it is easy to take your family for granted.

[-1:22.00]I like holidays and long weekends

[-1:23.00]because they give us a chance to celebrate having a family.

[-1:24.00]QUOTABLE QUOTES!

[-1:25.00]Eest to West, home is the best.

[-1:26.00]Let's singing a song

[-1:27.00]SECTION 2 MEANING THROUGH PRACTICE

[-1:28.00]Part 1:Listen carefully to Danny's conversation with his mom.

[-1:29.00]Then,answer the questions below.

[-1:30.00]Put"T"in brackets for answers that are true and"F"for those that are false.

[-1:31.00]Part 2:Listen to Jenny talking about dinners at her grandma's house

[-1:32.00]and answer the questions.

[-1:33.00]SECTION 4 READING FOR KNOWLEDGE

[-1:34.00]Family Names

[-1:35.00]Learning a language is also learning a culture.

[-1:36.00]A good knowledge of the culture

[-1:37.00]in which the language has grown will help us learn the language better.

[-1:38.00]If you come from North America, you probaly got your name from your family.

[-1:39.00]Your first name was given to you by your parents, and your last name,

[-1:40.00]or surname,is the same name that your parents have.

[-1:41.00]It si your family name.Long ago, however, people had only one name.

[-1:42.00]A man could be called simply John or Peter.

[-1:43.00]A woman could be called Mary or Elizabeth.

[-1:44.00]After some time, there were many people with the same name,

[-1:45.00]so second names were needed.

[-1:46.00]In this way,the children of John were called, for example,Peter and Mary Johnson.

[-1:47.00]Names such as Wilson(Will's son),Jackson,Anderson and Davidson came into use.

[-1:48.00]"Mac"or"Mc"means"son of",so the name Macgregory means son of Gregory,

[-1:49.00]and MacDonald means son of Donald.

[-1:50.00]"Fitz"is another way of saying"son of"."Fils"means"son"in French.

[-1:51.00]So Fitzpatrick and Fitzgerald mean son,or child,of Patrick or Gerald.

[-1:52.00]Not all people got their names from their fathers.

[-1:53.00]Some got their names from the places where they lived.

[-1:54.00]For example,a family living in a village with many green trees

[-1:55.00]and plants was called Green or Greenberg.

[-1:56.00]If they lived in a town called Moor, they were called the Moores.

[-1:57.00]Sometimes people got their names from the way they looked.

[-1:58.00]A tall person was,perhaps,called Long.

[-1:59.00]If people in a family had dark hair,

[-2:00.00]the family was sometimes called the Blacks or the Browns.

[-2:-1.00]If their hair was light, they may have been called the Whites.

[-2:-2.00]People often took their names from the kind of work they did.

[-2:-3.00]A person who sewed clothing was named Taylor.

[-2:-4.00]Another person who baked bread was called Baker.

[-2:-5.00]A person who had a very good voice was named Singer.

[-2:-6.00]After a while these names stayed with people

[-2:-7.00]and became family names that are still used today.

[-2:-8.00]READING FOR LOVE

[-2:-9.00]Family

[-2:10.00]I ran into a stranger as he passed by,"Oh,excuse me,please"was my reply.

[-2:11.00]He said,"Please excuse me too;I wasn't watching for you."

[-2:12.00]We were very polite,this stranger and I.

[-2:13.00]We went on our way and we said good-bye.

[-2:14.00]But at home a different story is told.

[-2:15.00]How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

[-2:16.00]Later that day, cooking the ecening meal,My son stood beside me very still.

[-2:17.00]When I turned,I nearly knocked him down.

[-2:18.00]"Move out of the way,"I said with a frown. He walked away, his little heart broken.

[-2:19.00]I didn't realize how rudely I'd spoken.

[-2:20.00]While I lay awake in bed,A voice came to me and said,

[-2:21.00]"While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use,

[-2:22.00]But the children you love, you seem to abuse.

[-2:23.00]Go and look on the kitchen floor,You'll find some flowers there by the door.

[-2:24.00]Those are the flowers he brought for you.

[-2:25.00]He picked them himself:pink, yellow and blue.

[-2:26.00]He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,

[-2:27.00]And you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

[-2:28.00]By this time,I felt very small,And now my tears began to fall.

[-2:29.00]I quietly went and knelt by his bed;"Wake up,little one,wake up,"I said.

[-2:30.00]"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"

[-2:31.00]He smiled,"I found'em,our by the tree[-2:32.00]I picked'em because they're pretty like you.

[-2:33.00]I know you'd like'em,especially the blue."

[-2:34.00]I said,"Son,I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;

[-2:35.00]I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."

[-2:36.00]He said,"Oh,Mom,that's okay.I love you anyway."

[-2:37.00]I said,"Son,I love you too,And I do like the flowers,especially the blue."
