Windsor castle, of all Britain's royal palaces, none is older, larger or more loved. This magnificent thousand-year-old fortress is no museum -- it's a vast, living castle.

Home to the Queen since childhood Windsor is also the place from which the royal family take their name. The Queen's children and grandchildren have come to love this kingdom within the kingdom. For the first time, unprecedented access has been granted to the inner life of the castle. This is a historical portrait of an entire year inside the royal domain.

When the queen and her government entertain world leaders on grand state occasions, they come to Windsor.

-- We've lived here as in a home very much more so than, than, every body since perhaps Queen Victoria. I think that's what gives it its attraction and its strength is a coherent community which starts from the fact the Queen lives here. It would still go if she wasn't, but it would be a completely different atmosphere.

Above all the pomp, the history and the grandeur, everyone at Windsor knows that this is the place the sovereign calls home.
