Coming up, the United States has flown twobombers over disputed islands in the East ChinaSea.
今天新聞的主要內(nèi)容有:美國兩架轟炸機飛過中國東海具有爭議的島嶼上空;
And, "we just don't know who might buy. I mean, there are a number of celebrities that buythem. I may have heard that Leonardo DiCaprio bought a dinosaur once." An entire dinosaurskeleton goes up for auction here in Britain.
But we'll start this edition of the global podcast with the news that the United States says it'sflown two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea. China has recentlydeclared the area part of its air defense zone, saying that any planes which fly over the islandshave to abide by a series of rules of a what it calls "emergency military measures". Japan whichalso claims the islands rejected China's declaration, as did Taiwan and South Korea. The USwas also unhappy.
Here is what the US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki had to say about the issue at anew conference in Washington. "This, you know, lateral action appears to be an attempt to,you know, laterally change the status quo in the East China Sea. That will raise regionaltensions and increase the risk of miscalculation, confrontation and accidents. And we'veurged the Chinese to exercise caution and restraint. We are also consulting with Japan andother affected parties."
So far, there is no reaction from China. So why did the Americans take this possibly riskycause of action? Jonny Dymond is in Washington.
"The Pentagon says this was a long planned training mission. And I think what it's patentlyclear from the reaction by both the Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel at the weekend and fromthe White House before the news leaked out of these planes having made this mission is thatAmerica does not recognise this new air defense zone. The White House and the Secretary ofDefense both made it very clear that they thought the air defense zone was a mistake. TheSecretary of Defense called it destabilizing, increasing the risk of misunderstanding andmiscalculation. And America has effectively just ignored it by pushing its planes through thiszone without doing any of the kind of notifications the Chinese had insisted people would haveto do if they were going to fly through the zone."
Should this be seen as a challenge to the Chinese or more a show of solidarity with US alliesin the region?
"I think it's probably the latter. I don't think the US is gonna strutting around here."
