As we had had a long walk through one of themarkets of old Delhi, we stopped at a square tohave a rest. After a time, we noticed a snakecharmer with two large baskets at the otherside of the square, so we went to have a look athim. As soon as he saw us, he picked up a longpipe which was covered with coins and openedone of the baskets. When he began to play a tune, wehad our first glimpse of the snake. It rose out ofthe basket and began to follow the movements ofthe pipe. We were very much surprised when the snake charmer suddenly began to play jazzand modern pop songs. The snake, however, continued to 'dance' slowly. It obviously could nottell the difference between Indian music and jazz!

精講筆記:
1. As we had had a long walk through one of the markets of Old Delhi, we stopped atthe square to have a rest.
當(dāng)我們穿過舊德里的市場時走了很長一段路,我們在一個廣場上停下來休息
語言點(diǎn)1 本句中as引導(dǎo)一個時間狀語從句。
語言點(diǎn)2 have a walk through = walk through 走路穿過
語言點(diǎn)3 不定式to have a rest作目的狀語。
2. After a time, we noticed a snake charmer with two large baskets at the other side ofthe square, se we went to have a look at him.
過了一小會兒,我們注意到廣場的那一邊有一個帶著兩個大籃子的耍蛇人,于是就走過去看看。
語言點(diǎn)1 after a time-after a while 過了一小會兒
語言點(diǎn)2 介詞短語 with two large baskets 和at the other side of the square 作 snake charmer 的后置定語
語言點(diǎn)3 went to have a look實(shí)際是兩個動作,went為謂語動間,to have a look為非謂語動詞,可譯為“走過去看看”.
3. As soon as he saw us, he picked up a long pipe which was covered with coins andopened oneof the baskets.
他一看見我們,就拿起一根長長的上面鑲著硬幣的管樂器,并掀開了一個籃子的蓋子。
語言點(diǎn)1 原句還可以改為:On seeing us, he picked up a long pipe which was covered with coinsand opened one of the baskets.
語言點(diǎn)2 which was covered with coins為定語從句,修飾限定pipe。
