  1. Watch your body language.

Don't recoil or scowl when somebody offers food to you. Be open, keep smiling, and shake your head without being negative about it. The person offering is probably just trying to be kind, so don't let your disgust outwardly show just because you don't want what they're offering.

  2. If you are allergic or have dietary restrictions, mention it.

Most people will have no trouble understanding if you say something like: "Thanks so much for the offer, but I'm actually allergic to shellfish," or: "Actually, I'm a vegetarian/keep Kosher."

  3. If you think you can pull it off, you can look shocked.

You can say something like "Really? For me?" before following up with your rejection. This way they will not be so offended because you were clearly touched and shocked by the kind offering.

  4. Tell them you aren't hungry.

Of course, this won't work if you want to turn down the stuffing but eat a full plate of the turkey, but it's especially great if you actually aren't hungry. It's also important that what they're offering you isn't substantial. It'd be weird to turn down a peanut because you aren't hungry.

  5. Tell them you don't like whatever it is.

Some people just don't like kiwis, and no one should force you to eat a kiwi if you tell them.

  6. If they pressure you, try not to back down.

They might say "Come on, give it a try." They might even insult you for not taking the food. If you truly don't want to eat it, just say "Really, I'm fine, but thank you so much." Being polite is the key, and so is resilience.

  7. Just give in.

If the person offering you food is insistent (although most people won't be), sometimes it's much easier and more polite to just take what they're offering you. Sometimes they'll even leave after handing it to you, and you can inconspicuously throw it away. Or, you could take a bite and then tell them that you don't like it- trying them should make them stop.

  8. Overall, be polite!

Don't just blow them off - this person is trying to be kind and offer you a part of their meal, so be thankful and kind, and understand their good intentions.
