father與mother

1. 漢語(yǔ)中說(shuō)“父母”，一般不說(shuō)“母父”，但在英語(yǔ)中兩者的順序卻可以顛倒。如：

Father and mother [Mother and father] are out shopping. 父母出去買(mǎi)東西了。

His father and mother [His mother and father] are both doctors. 他父母都是醫(yī)生。

將“父母”用一個(gè)詞表示，英語(yǔ)是 parents。參見(jiàn)parent。

2. 兩者都可直接用作呼語(yǔ)。如：

Good night, father. 爸爸，晚安。

What’s the matter, mother? 媽媽?zhuān)鍪裁词铝?

在口語(yǔ)中，也常用 pa, dad, daddy 以及 ma, mum, mom, mummy, mommy 等稱(chēng)呼父母。在家庭里或在熟人之間談及自己的 father, mother 時(shí)，其前通常不用物主代詞（但通常大寫(xiě)第一個(gè)字母）。如：

Why is Father out of work? 父親為什么失業(yè)了?

Mother is waiting for us. 母親在等我們。

在家庭之外談及自己的 father, mother 時(shí)，通常要使用物主代詞（但有時(shí)也省略）。如：

(My) Father used to take us to the seaside every year. （我）父親過(guò)去每年帶我們?nèi)ズ＿叀?/p>

但是若談到別人的 father, mother, 則必須用物主代詞。如：

How is your mother? 你母親好嗎?

Where is his father? 他父親在哪?

3. 兩者都可用于引申義，表示“……之父”“……之母”。如：

Chaucer is the father of English poetry. 喬叟是英詩(shī)的鼻祖。

George Washington is the father of his country. 喬治·華盛頓是美國(guó)的國(guó)父。

Failure is the mother of success. 失敗是成功之母。

Necessity is the mother of invention. 需要是發(fā)明之母。

4. 按美國(guó)風(fēng)俗，每年6月的第3個(gè)星期日為“父親節(jié)”(Father’s Day)；5月的第2個(gè)星期日為“母親節(jié)”(Mother’s Day)。

5. 漢語(yǔ)的“繼父”“繼母”，英語(yǔ)用 stepfather, stepmother表示；漢語(yǔ)的“岳父”“岳母”，英語(yǔ)用 father-in-law, mother-in-law表示；漢語(yǔ)的“養(yǎng)父”“養(yǎng)母”，英語(yǔ)用 adoptive father, adoptive mother 表示。
