up the creek字面意思是：“沿著小溪往上走”，早些時(shí)候美國(guó)人喜歡旅行時(shí)沿著河道漫步，由于不容易分清楚主流和支流，就常常會(huì)走到支流盡頭的沼澤地，發(fā)現(xiàn)時(shí)為時(shí)已晚。所以這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)的正確意思就是：“陷入困境，遭遇困難”。因此，當(dāng)美國(guó)人說(shuō)"We will be up the creek."時(shí)，他/她要表達(dá)的意思就是:"We will get into trouble."、"We will get into hot water."、"Things may become unfavorable to us."。
