[00:00.98]C So why is nature beginning to turn on us?
[00:05.71]One answer is over-population.
[00:07.86]The population of the world
[00:09.12]is growing at the rate of 10,000 people
[00:11.54]an hour,240,000 every day,
[00:15.91]nearly 90 million a year,
[00:18.52]with most of the growth in the developing world
[00:21.31]People in agricultural areas,
[00:23.69]unemployed and sometimes undernourished,
[00:26.47]move to the cities,and then set up unstable,
[00:29.69]sub-standard homes on poor soil
[00:32.03]which can easily collapse in earthquakes
[00:34.35]or slide downhill in landsides.
[00:37.36]On top of that,add climate change
[00:39.99]and the spectre of globle warming.
[00:42.42]This has mainly been caused
[00:43.65]by the mismanagement of the world's resources:
[00:46.66]carbon emissions from rich countries;
[00:48.90]the activities of the
[00:49.83]big multi-national companies;
[00:52.45]the deforestation for the world's forests.
[00:55.30]As a result,a hotter ocean leads to fiercer
[00:58.34]typhoons and hurricanes.
[01:00.23]Greater quantities of water evaporate,
[01:02.52]and more powerful winds dump this water
[01:05.36]against mountainsides with increasing strength.
[01:08.47]Atlantic hurricanes,
[01:09.82]for instance, are 40% stronger now
[01:13.11]than they were 30 years ago.
