"I should say she was pretty," said a loud and cheeryvoice just behind him.

“我要說她真漂亮。”他身后一個聲音快活地叫道。

Bernard started and looked around. The chubby redface of Benito Hoover was beaming down athim–beaming with manifest cordiality.

伯納吃了一驚，回頭一看。本尼托·胡怫正低著他那胖乎乎紅撲撲的臉望著他笑——顯然是發(fā)自內(nèi)心的笑。

Benito was notoriously good-natured. People saidof him that he could have got through life withoutever touching soma.

本尼托是以溫和著名的。大家都說他大概一輩子不必使用唆麻。

The malice and bad tempers from which other people had to take holidays never afflicted him.

壞心眼呀，怪脾氣呀，能弄得別人非休假不可的東西對他卻從來不起作用。

Reality for Benito was always sunny.

在本尼托面前現(xiàn)實永遠陽光燦爛。

"Pneumatic too. And how!" Then, in another tone: "But, I say," he went on, "you do look glum!What you need is a gramme of soma." Diving into his right-hand trouser-pocket, Benitoproduced a phial. "

“而且有靈氣。多有靈氣!”然后他換了一個調(diào)子，“可是我說，”他接下去，“你確實一臉憂郁，你需要的是一克唆麻，”他右手伸進口袋，掏出一個小瓶子，

One cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy … But, I say!"

“只需吞下一小片，十種煩惱都不見……可是我說!”

Bernard had suddenly turned and rushed away.

伯納已突然轉(zhuǎn)身匆匆走掉了。

Benito stared after him. "What can be the matter with the fellow?" he wondered, and, shakinghis head, decided that the story about the alcohol having been put into the poor chap's blood-surrogate must be true.

本尼托盯著他看了一會兒。“這家伙究竟是怎么回事了?”他感到茫然，搖了搖頭，認定關(guān)于那可憐家伙的代血劑里放進了過多酒精的故事是真的。

"Touched his brain, I suppose."

“影響了腦袋，我看是。”

He put away the soma bottle, and taking out a packet of sex-hormone chewing-gum,

他放開了唆麻瓶，掏出了一包性荷爾蒙口香糖，

stuffed a plug into his cheek and walked slowly away towards the hangars, ruminating.

塞了一片到嘴里，一邊納悶一邊慢慢走向飛機庫。

Henry Foster had had his machine wheeled out of its lock-up and, when Lenina arrived, wasalready seated in the cockpit, waiting.

亨利·福斯特已經(jīng)把他的飛機從機庫推出，列寧娜來到時，他已坐進了駕駛艙等候著。

"Four minutes late," was all his comment, as she climbed in beside him. He started the enginesand threw the helicopter screws into gear.

“晚了四分鐘。”他只說了這么一句。她上了飛機，在他身邊坐了下來。亨利發(fā)動引擎，直升機螺旋槳掛上了擋。

The machine shot vertically into the air.

亨利一加速，螺旋槳尖叫起來，轟鳴聲從大黃蜂變成了黃蜂，再從黃蜂變成了蚊子。

the speedometer showed that they were rising at the best part of two kilometres a minute.

速度計表明他們正以大體每分鐘兩公里的速度上升。

London diminished beneath them. The huge table-topped buildings were no more, in a fewseconds, than a bed of geometrical mushrooms sprouting from the green of park and garden.

倫敦在他們身下猛然縮小。幾秒鐘之內(nèi)巨大的平頂建筑便只如一片片幾何圖形的蘑菇，挺立于公園和花園的綠色之上。

In the midst of them, thin-stalked, a taller, slenderer fungus, the Charing-T Tower liftedtowards the sky a disk of shining concrete.

其中有一個小一點的細莖蘑菇，更高更長，向空中擎起一個亮閃閃的水泥圓盤，那就是切林T字架。
