我們渴望死亡，因為我們的毀壞意味著更偉大的新生命的到來。”

Again twelve stanzas. By this time the soma hadbegun to work.

又是十二個小節(jié)。這時唆麻已開始起作用。

Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on everyface in happy, friendly smiles.

眼睛發(fā)亮了，面頰泛紅了，內(nèi)心的博愛之光閃耀在每一張臉上，綻放為幸福和友好的歡笑。

Even Bernard felt himself a little melted. When Morgana Rothschild turned and beamed at him,he did his best to beam back.

即使是伯納也覺得多少融化了一些。摩爾根娜·羅斯柴爾德回頭對他笑著的時候，他也盡可能報以微笑。

But the eyebrow, that black two-in-one–alas, it was still there; he couldn't ignore it, couldn't,however hard he tried.

可是那眉毛，那連成一道的眉毛——唉!還是那樣子，他不能視而不見。

The melting hadn't gone far enough. Perhaps if he had been sitting between Fifi and Joanna …

For the third time the loving cup went round;

說不定就……愛情之杯第三次傳遞。

"I drink to the imminence of His Coming," said Morgana Rothschild, whose turn it happened tobe to initiate the circular rite.

“我為他即將到臨干杯。”摩爾根娜·羅斯柴爾德說。傳杯儀式正好輪到她啟動。

Her tone was loud, exultant. She drank and passed the cup to Bernard.

她的聲音高亢而歡樂。她喝過唆麻，遞給了伯納。

"I drink to the imminence of His Coming," he repeated, with a sincere attempt to feel that thecoming was imminent; but the eyebrow continued to haunt him, and the Coming, so far ashe was concerned, was horribly remote.

“我為他的即將到臨干杯。”伯納重復著她的話，打心眼里努力想感到他即將到來，但那一道眉毛仍然縈繞不去，對伯納來說，他的到臨還遠得可怕。

He drank and handed the cup to Clara Deterding. "It'll be a failure again," he said to himself. "Iknow it will." But he went on doing his best to beam.

他喝了唆麻，把杯子傳給了笛特什。“看來這一次又要失敗了，”他心想，“會失敗的，我知道。”可是他仍然竭盡全力歡笑著。

The loving cup had made its circuit. Lifting his hand, the President gave a signal; the chorusbroke out into the third Solidarity Hymn.

這一輪愛之杯傳遞完畢，主席舉手發(fā)出信號，合唱爆發(fā)為團結圣歌第三章：

"Feel how the Greater Being comes!

“體會吧，更偉大的存在如何降臨!

Rejoice and, in rejoicings, die!

歡樂吧，我們在歡樂之中隱遁!

Melt in the music of the drums!

融渾了!在砰砰的鼓點里融渾!

For I am you and you are I."

因為你們便是我，我也是你們!”

As verse succeeded verse the voices thrilled with an ever intenser excitement.

一支歌隨著一支歌，歌聲越來越激動、高亢。

The sense of the Coming's imminence was like an electric tension in the air.

他即將降臨之感有如空中積蓄的雷電。

The President switched off the music and, with the final note of the final stanza, there wasabsolute silence–the silence of stretched expectancy, quivering and creeping with a galvaniclife.

組長關掉了樂曲，隨著最后的樂曲的最后一個音符消失，出現(xiàn)了絕對的寂靜——長期渴望所形成的寂靜在帶電的生命里顫抖著，爬行著。

The President reached out his hand; and suddenly a Voice, a deep strong Voice, more musicalthan any merely human voice, richer, warmer, more vibrant with love and yearning andcompassion, a wonderful, mysterious, supernatural Voice spoke from above their heads.Very slowly, "Oh, Ford, Ford, Ford," it said diminishingly and on a descending scale.

主席伸出了一只手;突然，一個聲音，一個深沉雄渾的聲音，比任何人世的聲音都更悅耳，更豐富，更溫暖，更加顫動著愛和同情，一個精彩的、神秘的、超自然的聲音在人們的頭頂非常緩慢地傳來，“哦，福帝，福帝，福帝。”那聲音逐漸微弱，逐漸降低。

A sensation of warmth radiated thrillingly out from the solar plexus to every extremity of thebodies of those who listened; tears came into their eyes; their hearts, their bowels seemed tomove within them, as though with an independent life.

一陣濃郁的溫馨從聽眾的太陽神經(jīng)叢驚心動魄地輻射出來，造人他們身上的每一個極點;他們不禁熱淚盈眶，心肝五臟都似乎在隨著一個獨立的生命悸動。

"Ford!" they were melting, "Ford!" dissolved, dissolved.

“福帝!”他們軟癱了，“福帝!”他們?nèi)诨?，融化了?/p>

Then, in another tone, suddenly, startlingly.

然后，那聲音又突然以另一種調(diào)子令人震驚地呼叫起來。

"Listen!" trumpeted the voice. "Listen!" They listened.

“聽呀!”那聲音像喇叭，“聽呀!”他們聽著。
