The mere suggestion of illness or wounds was to himnot only horrifying, but even repulsive and ratherdisgusting. Like dirt, or deformity, or old age. Hastilyhe changed the subject.

提起疾病和痛苦他不但恐怖，而且抵觸，甚至厭惡，像遇見(jiàn)了骯臟、畸形或是衰老。他趕緊換了個(gè)話題。

"I wonder if you'd like to come back to London withus?" he asked, making the first move in a campaignwhose strategy he had been secretly elaboratingever since, in the little house, he had reahzed whothe "father" of this young savage must be. Would you like that?

The young man's face lit up. "Do you really mean it?"

"Well …" He hesitated doubtfully. That revolting creature! No, it was impossible. Unless, unless…

It suddenly occurred to Bernard that her very revoltingness might prove an enormous asset.

"But of course!" he cried, making up for his first hesitations with an excess of noisy cordiality.

The young man drew a deep breath.

But the young man had evidently not heard the question.

"O wonder!" he was saying; and his eyes shone, his face was brightly flushed.

The flush suddenly deepened;

he was thinking of Lenina, of an angel in bottle-green viscose, lustrous with youth and skinfood, plump, benevolently smiling.

His voice faltered.

他的聲音遲疑了。

"O brave new world," he began, then-suddenly interrupted himself; the blood had left hischeeks; he was as pale as paper.

“啊，美妙的新世界廣’他背起書(shū)來(lái)，又突然打住了。血液已經(jīng)離開(kāi)了他的面頰;他蒼白得像紙。

"Are you married to her?" he asked.

“你跟她結(jié)婚了嗎?”他問(wèn)。

Am I what?

我什么?

Married. You know–for ever. They say 'for ever' in the Indian words; it can't be broken.

結(jié)婚。你知道——永不分離。他們用印第安話說(shuō)：永不分離?；橐鍪遣荒芊蛛x的。

"Ford, no!" Bernard couldn't help laughing.

“福帝呀，沒(méi)有!”伯納忍不住笑了。

John also laughed, but for another reason—laughed for pure joy.

約翰也笑了。卻是為了別的原因——純粹是因?yàn)楦吲d。

"O brave new world," he repeated. "O brave new world that has such people in it.

“啊，美妙的新世界，”他重復(fù)了一句，“啊，美妙的新世界，有多么出色的人物。”

"You have a most peculiar way of talking sometimes," said Bernard, staring at the young man inperplexed astonishment. And, anyhow, hadn't you better wait till you actually see the newworld?

“你說(shuō)話的方式有時(shí)候很特別，”伯納又迷惑又驚訝地盯著小伙子，不過(guò)，等到你真正看見(jiàn)新世界時(shí)再說(shuō)，好不好?
