To meet the Arch-Community-Songster ofCanterbury and Mr. Savage. Bernard had proclaimedhis triumph on every invitation card.

為了宣布他的勝利，伯納曾經(jīng)在每一份請(qǐng)?zhí)蠈?xiě)上以下的話：與坎脫伯雷首席歌唱家和野蠻人先生見(jiàn)面。

But the Savage had chosen this evening of allevenings to lock himself up in his room, to shout"Háni!" and even (it was lucky that Bernard didn'tunderstand Zuni) "Sons eso tse-na!"

但是這位野蠻人先生偏偏選在今天晚上把自己關(guān)在屋里，而且大叫“哈呢!”甚至“松厄索策納!”幸好伯納不懂祖尼語(yǔ)。

What should have been the crowning moment of Bernard's whole career had turned out to bethe moment of his greatest humiliation.

那應(yīng)當(dāng)成為伯納整個(gè)事業(yè)光輝頂點(diǎn)的時(shí)刻竟然變成了他奇恥大辱的時(shí)刻。

"I'd so much hoped ..." he stammeringly repeated, looking up at the great dignitary withpleading and distracted eyes.

“我曾經(jīng)非常希望......”他抬頭用慌亂和乞求的眼光望著那位大人物，結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地重復(fù)道。

"My young friend," said the Arch-Community-Songster in a tone of loud and solemn severity;there was a general silence.

“我的年輕朋友。”社區(qū)首席歌唱家用莊重、嚴(yán)厲、響亮的聲音說(shuō)。人們鴉雀無(wú)聲。

"Let me give you a word of advice." He wagged his finger at Bernard.

“讓我給你一句忠告。”他對(duì)伯納晃動(dòng)著一根指頭，

"Before it's too late. A word of good advice." (His voice became sepulchral.)

“還不算太晚的忠告。”他的聲音變得低沉而寬宏了。

Mend your ways, my young friend, mend your ways.

你可要痛改前非，痛改前非。

He made the sign of the T over him and turned away.

他在他的頭上畫(huà)一個(gè)T字，轉(zhuǎn)過(guò)了身子。

"Lenina, my dear," he called in another tone. "Come with me."

“列寧娜，我親愛(ài)的，”他用另一種口氣叫道，“跟我來(lái)。”

Obediently, but unsmiling and (wholly insensible of the honour done to her) without elation,Lenina walked after him, out of the room.

列寧娜服從了，跟在他身后，出了屋子，但是沒(méi)有笑容，并不得意(絲毫沒(méi)有受寵若驚的意思)。

The other guests followed at a respectful interval. The last of them slammed the door.Bernard was all alone.

別的客人在一段意味著尊重的時(shí)間之后跟著出去了。最后的客人砰的一聲關(guān)上門(mén)，便只剩下了伯納一個(gè)人。

Punctured, utterly deflated, he dropped into a chair and, covering his face with his hands,began to weep.

他的氣球給戳破了，完全泄了氣，他一屁股坐到了椅子上，用雙手捂住臉，哭了起來(lái)。

A few minutes later, however, he thought better of it and took four tablets of soma.

過(guò)了幾分鐘，他想通了，吞下了四片唆麻。

Upstairs in his room the Savage was reading Romeo and Juliet.

野蠻人在樓上讀他的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》。

Lenina and the Arch-Community-Songster stepped out on to the roof of Lambeth Palace.

列寧娜和首席歌唱家下了飛機(jī)，踏上了蘭蓓斯宮的屋頂。

"Hurry up, my young friend—I mean, Lenina," called the Arch-Songster impatiently from the liftgates.

“快一點(diǎn)，年輕朋友——我是說(shuō)你，列寧娜。”首席歌唱家不耐煩地從電梯門(mén)口叫道。

Lenina, who had lingered for a moment to look at the moon, dropped her eyes and camehurrying across the roof to rejoin hirn.

列寧娜看了看月亮，逗留了一下，然后垂下了眼皮，匆匆走過(guò)屋頂，來(lái)到他面前。
