Chapter 12 A Rescue

第十二章 救援

Louis liked to sleep on the lake.

路易斯喜歡睡在這個湖上。

At night, after blowing taps, he would waddle downto the sandy beach by the dock.

夜里，吹過熄燈號后，他就搖搖擺擺地走上船塢附近的沙灘。

There he removed his slate, his chalk pencil, and histrumpet and hid them under a bush.

他在那里摘下他的石板，石筆，小號，把它們藏到灌木叢里。

Then he shoved off into the water.

然后，他跳到了水里。

As soon as he was afloat, he would tuck his head under a wing.

剛一浮起來，他就把頭塞到了翅膀下面。

For a while he would doze and think about home and his parents.

他打了一個盹兒，想著家和他的父母。

Then he would think about Serena--how beautiful she was and how much he loved her.

然后他又想到了塞蕾娜——她是多么的美而他又是多么的愛她。

Pretty soon he would be fast asleep.

他很快就睡著了。

When daylight came, he would swim ashore and eat a light breakfast of water plants.

天剛破曉，他就游到岸邊，簡單地吃了點水生植物當(dāng)早餐。

Then he'd put on his things, climb onto the flat rock, and blow reveille.

然后他掛上他那些東西，爬到那塊平坦的巖石上，吹起了起床號。

The boys, hearing the trumpet, would wake and rush to the dock to swim before breakfast.

男孩子們聽到了這號聲，就都爬起來沖向船塢，開始了早餐前的游泳。

After supper at night the campers would often play volleyball.

晚飯后營員們常常打排球。

Louis loved the game.

路易斯喜愛這項運動。

He couldn't hop around as fast as the boys, but he could reach far out with his long neck

他不能象那些男孩們跳得一樣快，但他能用他的長脖子遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地夠到球，

and poke the ball into the air and over the net.

把球頂?shù)娇罩胁暨^網(wǎng)。

It was very hard to get a ball past Louis--he could return almost any shot.

很難讓路易斯接漏一個球——他差不多能把每個來球都頂回去。

When the boys chose sides at the start of the game, Louis was always the first to be chosen.

當(dāng)男孩們在比賽開始前挑選運動員時，路易斯總是第一個被選中。

The boys loved camp life in Ontario.

男孩們喜歡安大略的夏令營生活。

They learned how to handle a canoe. They learned to swim.

他們學(xué)習(xí)怎樣怎么劃獨木舟。他們學(xué)習(xí)游泳。

Sam Beaver took them on nature walks and taught them to sit quietly on a log and observewild creatures and birds.

薩姆·比弗領(lǐng)他們?nèi)ゴ笞匀贿h(yuǎn)足，教他們靜靜地坐在一根大木頭上觀察野生動物和鳥類。

He showed them how to walk in the woods without making a lot of noise.

他教他們怎樣才能幾乎不出聲地在森林中行走。

Sam showed them where the kingfisher had his nest, in a hole in the bank by a stream.

He showed them the partridge and her chicks.

When the boys heard a soft co-co-co-co, Sam told them they were listening to the SawwhetOwl,

當(dāng)男孩們聽到一串輕柔的“可 —可—可—可”聲時，薩姆告訴他們說他們剛才聽到的是拉鋸梟的叫聲，

smallest of the owls, no bigger than a man's hand.

它是最小的貓頭鷹，并不比一個成人的巴掌大多少。

Sometimes in the middle of the night the whole camp would wake to the scream of a wildcat.

有時全營的人會在半夜被一只山貓的尖叫吵醒。

Nobody ever saw a wildcat during the entire summer, but his scream was heard at night.

整個夏天還沒人親眼見過一只山貓呢，可它的尖叫卻總能在夜里聽到。
