第七交響樂(lè)第二樂(lè)章

Monday, March 26, 1827.

1827年3月26日,星期一。

The north wind blows and snow billows through the air.

北風(fēng)呼呼地吹著,漫天飛舞的雪花。

Thunder claps above the empty streets.

雷聲在空曠的街道響徹。

It is a day that will go down in history.

這一天將會(huì)被載入史冊(cè)。

A fine gentleman stands alone in a doorway.

一位舉止儒雅的紳士寂寥地站在門(mén)口。

His carriage awaits, but he does not move.

馬車停在旁邊,但是他卻沒(méi)有上車。

He waves the carriage on.

他揮手示意讓馬車前行。

Tonight the gentleman will walk home.

今晚,紳士將要步行回家。

Like many in Vienna, his eyes are full of tears.

就像許多在維也納的人一樣,他的眼里飽含著淚水。

Ludwig van Beethoven has died.

路德維希·凡·貝多芬去世了。

Three days later, spring had arrived.

三天后,春回大地。

The people of Vienna flooded into the streets.

維也納人民涌上街頭。

They had come to pay their respects to the man who has written such beautiful music.

來(lái)憑吊這位譜寫(xiě)出如此華美樂(lè)章的音樂(lè)家。

At three o'clock in the afternoon, nine priests blessed the composer's coffin and the funeral procession left Beethoven's house.

午后三點(diǎn),九名牧師為貝多芬的靈柩進(jìn)行了相關(guān)儀式,送葬的隊(duì)伍離開(kāi)了貝多芬的家。

The pallbearers wore rose bouquets and white silk scarves.

護(hù)柩者拿著玫瑰花束,戴著白色的絲綢圍巾。

They walked with the coffin through the vast crowds.

他們護(hù)送著靈柩穿過(guò)人群。

The crowds were so dense it took an hour and a half to go one block to the church.

街上的人是那樣的多,護(hù)送隊(duì)伍走了一個(gè)半小時(shí)才穿過(guò)一座街區(qū)來(lái)到教堂。

There, in a service lit with candles, the people of Vienna said goodbye.

按照往例,教堂里點(diǎn)滿了蠟燭。維也納人民向貝多芬道別。

The schools of Vienna were let out that day.

那天,維也納所有的學(xué)校都放假了。

If you had looked carefully you might have spotted in the crowd, a boy with a serious face.

如果你觀察仔細(xì)的話,也許會(huì)在人群中看到一個(gè)面容嚴(yán)肅的男孩。

His name is Christoph, and he is my nephew.

他名叫Christoph,是我的外甥。

And there was a time when he came to know Mr. Beethoven well.

在過(guò)去的一段時(shí)間里,他逐漸地開(kāi)始了解貝多芬。

It was not a happy time in Christoph's life.

對(duì)Christoph來(lái)說(shuō),那不是一段快樂(lè)的時(shí)光。

His father had died.

那時(shí),他的父親去世了。

He was only ten years old.

而他只有十歲。

I was a young man myself, a student of music in Salzburg.

我當(dāng)時(shí)還很年輕,在薩爾斯堡學(xué)習(xí)音樂(lè)。

Christoph lived in Vienna.

Christoph住在維也納。

He wrote me letters about his troubles.

他給我寫(xiě)信,向我傾訴他的煩惱。

As you will hear, my little nephew had a lot to say.
